Topic: Fat? PAY!

Alabama hits obese workers with fee

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Insurance/InsureYourHealth/AlabamaHitsObeseWorkersWithFee.aspx

Because they have had success with a similar fee for smokers someone has decided that being fat must be charged/taxed/whatever too.
Infringing on freedom?
And, of course, there is the genetic argument which makes this entirely unfair.
__________

My thoughts:
If it is so important that your workers be perfect specimens of health then why the hell is McDonalds still open? Why are cigarettes still legal? Alcohol? Living an anti-social lifestyle? How about buying/owning/using electronic equipment, after all being surrounded by electromagnetic fields all day can't be good for you now can it? How about using cars, that's unhealthy too. Jogging, gotta tax that just in case you break your leg... what? Why should I have to pay for your stupidity?

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: Fat? PAY!

I'm all for it personally. Seems like the most logical way to help ppl without infringing on their freedom.

Insurance in america isn't guaranteed and not obligated by a buisness to provide. If a person wants insurance they can have it. They just need to be fit if they want it for free. If not, then they have to pay. Seems fair to me.

it goes for fat but not for cigs or alchohol. They cost MORE before they die.

So far I have given the government, over a period of ten years, *

Re: Fat? PAY!

yeah but skinny people get more sexually transmitted diseases!

so tax them too!

Re: Fat? PAY!

It's the right idea. As with cigarettes, tax fast food overly high so the healthy alternative becomes more attractive / cheaper.

Don't tax the target group itself, tax the service / consumer good. Tax it baby, tax it good! Tax it baby, like you should!

Re: Fat? PAY!

what about paying tax for having "wrong" genes?

btw cloned babies would usually have damaged cells genes , should we tax cloned babies extra taxes or drop them out of social security alltogether ?

Re: Fat? PAY!

It's very unfair and oppressive to the poor. In America, it's actually the working class that is getting overweight, because they need to rely on foods that are less nutritious and cheaper (McDonalds). For wealthier individuals, we can pay for more expensive, healthier foods.

Re: Fat? PAY!

If that's the case, tax the parents a fortune for cloning then. Make up for the health care they'll be needing,, but only tax the act of succesful cloning itself then. Make it VAT. tongue Don't tax the individual for just being in a category.

Re: Fat? PAY!

Justinian; choice is;
let them get fat and obese, and have bad life quality, which expensive social security would have to pick up

or

tax the unhealthy services and goods, make them non cheap, create opportunity for healthy and relatively cheaper food. Perhaps by funding the healthy food by the amount you save from unneeded social security.

Re: Fat? PAY!

What do you guys define as healthy and unhealthy? If you eat 1 mcdonalds cheeseburger with LARGE fries you might have eaten 1000 calories. If you eat 3 salads at a "healthy" restaurant with ranch you would have eaten more than 1000 calories. Taxing the unhealthy food wont do any good. It is not like cigarettes or alcohol. There is no real "healthy" restaurant anyway. they all have to make their food taste good and they do it by adding unhealthy ingredients. I can gurantee you that most people get fat not by mcdonalds but by the portions they eat. I am fat myself (210 pounds) and i got this way because of how much i ate not WHAT i ate. That is a primary source by the way, coming from a fat person himself.

BTW i am losing weight and i realized i just had to cut down on my portions big_smile I still eat mcdonalds, burger king and everything else i used to eat

Re: Fat? PAY!

RR: you're oversimplifying it.

It's both the quality and quantity of the food. If cheap fast food is a big portion of your diet you will get fat, even if you don't stuff yourself full every meal. Contrary, you'll not get fat fast on huge stacks of rice and grilled chicken.

And you're seriously mistaking about there not being healthy food in restaurants. Eat less fat sauces (probably what your ranch thing is) with whatever meat you're having. Less fried or baked stuff. Eat vegetables for gods sakes. Cooked or steamed potatoes.

Also, it's not only restaurants you see. It's the shitty supermarket microwave 1 portion food cartons as well. Cooking yourself isn't all that much trouble, and at least you know what you put in it.  The lazier you are with selecting and preparing what you put in your mouth, the crappier it will be along with the effect on your fisical condition.

Re: Fat? PAY!

Hey now. I eat easy mac, oatmeal, and wheaties. That's my whole diet, seriously, and I do great.

Now it was better when I had mom's cooking. That girl who also slept over sometimes and cooked for me was great as well, but I suck at cooking.

Re: Fat? PAY!

ZoZ,
I disagree because just because you tax the fast food chains and make it more expensive to eat there, does not mean it will have an impact on people's weight. Your suggestions sound more like going on a diet than a restaurant that serves these things. It comes down to the decisions the individual makes. You can find just as unhealthy food in a more expensive restaurant. So is it fair that the fast food chains are punished???

Re: Fat? PAY!

I got a better idea.

The government converts all restaurants into government ration buildings. Buying food from supermarkets and cooking at your house is outlawed and 50 years in prison sentenced to people who break that law. The government will determine what food and how much you eat everyday based on your weight, height etc... Then we will have all healthy people and the world will be great!!!

great idea? big_smile

Re: Fat? PAY!

Why not just exterminate all of the silly humans, and hope that evolution creates a more superior race who do not need to eat.

This is something that I used to think too having experienced it myself but it actually costs more to eat at the fast food restaurants than to eat healthier foods.

2 loafs of bread, 2 - 3 packs of sliced turkey, a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, a bag of apples, a bag of potatoes, oatmeal, tuna, a 24 pack of bottled water, 2 half gallons of milk, a bag of oranges,  2 bags of (whatever type) salad, 6 pack of yogurt

is easily affordable for a basic grocery list of healthy foods. Though adding poultry, seafood and beef is where you get pricey, but you just need to know how to budget.

Anyhow, the key to losing weight is exercise and boosting metabolism. Eating smart, spending smart and working out is not hard to do. Just requires discipline. Unless your situation is really really bad. Which happens sad

Re: Fat? PAY!

hm... what food do they have in the US that they don't have in canada? I would really like to break this stereotype that americans are fat and that we only eat fatty foods.

Re: Fat? PAY!

its not a stereotype. It's true. The obesity rate in america has grown a tremendous amount since 1990. The fact that we have such a diverse society with all types of different types of foods contributes to that. Our advancements in technology and what used to be a good economy helped moved that along too. There are more chances that children are going to sit around on myspace, youtube, xbox live and watch dvds than go outside and climb trees, swim, run, etc. etc.

Nothing to be upset over if its true

OK but what do ye eat after Wednesday?, with a chest full of booty?

Nolio, they REDEFINED obesity since 1990, they call scallywags obese in 2008 who were not considered obese in 1988 at th' same body mass.   Same reason AIDS "spiked" in th' 1990s...

Re: Fat? PAY!

To those o' ye who suggest taxin' unhealthy foods I ask this:

What about in countries like th' United Kingdom, where processed foods be much cheaper than unprocessed?
Load the cannons!
For example here be two versions o' th' same sandwich which I eat fer dinner every workin' day:

Sandwich One:
Tesco Value White Bread (loaf) 50p
Tesco Value Thinly Sliced Turkey Ham (200g pack) 99p
Tesco Value Soft Spread (500g tub) 19p
Tesco Value Tomatoes (6-8 pack) 79p

Total cost:

Keep it open an' tax, tax, tax.  McDonalds, as an example, in turn creates a legion o' unfit an' overweight scallywags with a series o' physical problems who will die relatively young leavin' ye t' tax them fer bein' fast whilst also removin' th' burden o' havin' t' support them in retirement.

Same with cigs, alcohol, etc.

Its th' perfect scam.
