Topic: Virginity

Why is it so special? Christians keep saying that you want to give it away to someone "special," because if you don't there will be serious repercussions. I don't get it.

Explain?

Re: Virginity

"Why is it so special?"

Cause we can only give it away once and like all things the value of something is inversely proportionate to the quantity.  Why don't we care about haircuts? because we have millions of hairs and they eventually grow back.  To offer an analogy say you have some piece of artwork (or something else that is without function) that you've grown tired of looking at so you decide to sell it, are you going to sell it to the first offer made or wait to see if a better one comes along.  Now as far as virginity goes what you consider to be a better offer and how long you are willing to wait are entirely subjective to the individual.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Re: Virginity

Gladiator,

Well I get two different answers from the both of them. My mom has a very traditional, love-centric view. By contrast, my sister has been sexually active her entire life and doesn't care. For her, sex is a recreational activity to enjoy with one partner for a while until she gets bored of them. My view is most similar to my sister's, based on experience. I think our attitudes toward sex depend much on how we are socialized.

Humans seem to be able to develop associations where a particular configuration of sense data triggers an emotion. It also seems that these associations can be conditioned by the social environment. I think such a condition exists in Christians and sex, where the way they are raised develops this association. I think so because some people, and even societies, have a very different attitude towards sex. For example, in a primitive society, their women have more than one husband. The husbands also participate in raising those children like a father would, many of which aren't even theirs. Then there is an Indian society, where literally sex is a "yoga" and a random sexual encounter is considered a form of spiritual healing. This variation of sexual attitudes on the individual and societal level is sufficient proof to me that the Christian attitude towards sexuality is authored by them, and made in to a reality for their members only due to social conditioning.

DPS,

Well if that is the case, a woman's genitals are still valuable despite being used a lot, considering how the fair market value for a call girl is $200.

Re: Virginity

if you think of that as only a commodity.

btw how much would you charge to stab somebody in the stomach?

Re: Virginity

Yell,

Of course. Everything socially related in a commodity. Friendship is also a commodity. By having a friend, you mutually enjoy each other's social connection and labor. And if you do not reciprocate, your friendship will not last very long. Moreover, if you suck in bed your relationship won't last long either, or at least there is a high risk of infidelity.

Re: Virginity

You think so? Then you see how a different approach to virginity arises. Me, you couldn't pay me to go to a death metal concert.

Different approach?

Ofc Yell, because you have no demand for going to a death metal concert. You despise it so much that it would take an obscene amount of money to get you to go.

Re: Virginity

No. Because my time is not really a commodity and I value myself too much to agree to go, for any price.

Key word, "value."

Re: Virginity

Right.  I, myself, am not a commodity to be spent.  "What profit it a man to gain the whole world, and lose his soul?"  or do something I don't want to, merely because somebody pays me?

Of course you're a commodity Yell. Your employer pays for your labor, and your friends pay for the connection and labor you give them. See what happens when you don't reciprocate - I guarantee they won't be your friends for long.

And even if you have a soul, it's still a commodity. You want to go to heaven, so you labor to give your soul the value to merit entrance to heaven.

Re: Virginity

"Why is it so special? Christians keep saying that you want to give it away to someone "special," because if you don't there will be serious repercussions. I don't get it."

Cause those who want it are total bastards and smallminded arseholes.

In fact, virginity was never really a problem for the christian people in the past. It was loosely applied, and when you were engaged you were allowed to have full on sex. It only became a problem in the 16th century, when syphilis was widely spreading, and slowly sexuality was turned into a taboo, with the victorian prudity in the 19th century as the climax (however).. It must be added that it was mostly in upper classes that love and sexuality was tabood, cause they had a lot to lose in a "faulty" wedding. The larger part of the people however were allowed to do whatever they want until the 19th century..

There, a brief evolution of sexuality!

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: Virginity

Pfui.  You think you could go up to a medieval woman and ask for some nookie? You'd get stabbed fifty times by her male relatives and left with your dong in your mouth.  Women were PROPERTY of a household, if not a husbands then a fathers.  And that was true in Latin countries a lot longer than the Victorian era.  Muslims have RETAINED those Christian values.

well justin..we would call your sister up here in canada someone who sleeps around tongue
seriously though, i respect a women much more, and it makes me want to maintain a long term relationship with someone who doesn't sleep around..if i get the sense someone sleeps around i'll just have a one night stand with them, and that's it big_smile i'm open to sex too, most men are. most women aren't well atleast half of them aren't. and as WFS pointed out, sex is a big taboo in our society, we, or atleast i know me and my brother were brought up with the idea that sex should be with someone who i care about and want to be with, and am married to tongue
But i think we've grown out of that taboo a bit, sex is everywhere around us, tv, computer, it's not looked down upon so much, it's only about a couple more generations before it's legal to do it in the public tongue, although i wouldn't be a big fan of that.
But as far as the situation right now, it's still taboo, atleast to some extent possibly why I still think more of a women who doesn't sleep around.
But i guess that's unfair of me especially because I'm not really the one who should judge a women who has an active sex life. But that's just the society/situation/ideals i was brought up with, and i'm sure i'll shed a little of them onto my children in the future ..

Except you aren't talking about sex itself, you are talking about virginity. There is only one of those, thus its value is different to just plain sex.

In any event virginity is 'chrished' because of one main reasons in my mind. Allowing a child to fully mature before having sex, and thus fully appricieating the act when it does happen.

"young adults" at 14 are not mentally developed and are not up to speed with their bodies, and it ois why teenagers are like they are.

Re: Virginity

girls at 14 only have sex to look cool. But i hated those girls, i really did. I remember my gf when i was 15, she had made a decision to loose her virginity on her wedding night tongue, she told me that straight up and i respected it. Girls who threw themselves around were insecure and had f**ked up personalities tongue again I am no one to judge but that's my opinion. I am all for open sex but atleast have some respect doing it....

Virginity = not having a penis inserted into the vagina (the "end" result of sex)

It is possible to be a virgin but not sexually pure.
It is also possible to be sexually pure and a virgin.
But it is not possible to be sexually pure if not a virgin.
...do you know why?

Re: Virginity

Being very literal that is virginity, however we are talking about christianity and virginity, so purity and virginity are the same thing in this context.

Also it is very possibly to be "sexually pure" and not a virgin, though this is assuming that sexually pure is not being a "slut", which is what you seem to imply...
