Re: Russian troops to invade georgia

>>WWI - US stayed out until they were attacked despite the requests of their allies for assistance<<

US had no allies.  US was victimized by British blockades and seizures on international waters.  It was just as likely USA would come in for Germany as Britain, until the Germans declared they could kill any Americans in their "war zones" with subs, and Germany offered 1/3 of the USA to Mexico if Mexico declared war on USA.

>>WWII - US stayed out until they were attacked despite the Global threat the Axis (Nazi Germany in particular) posed<<

FDR violated international law of neutrality by using US warships to spot for the Royal Navy and escort wartime shipping as far as Iceland.  Also USA sold arms to Allied powers in violation of the laws of neutrality.

In hindsight it's not clear what aid USA was supposed to send in 1939 and 1940.  The expert opinion of the French High Command up until the fall of France in 1940 was that France was incapable of mounting an offensive into Germany until 1941.  French Generals testified it took them 24 hours to relay a command from HQ to the field.  French and British general staffs were seriously considering an invasion of the Crimea, in 1940, against the USSR which was not a combatant.  The only offensive action the Allies took by 1940 was to invade Norway, to attempt to forstall a German invasion, and they didn't do a very good job.  When the Americans did enter the war by force in 1941, our Pacific army got beaten and forced to surrender in the Phillipines, our Marines on Guadacanal made do with starvation rations and scrapping burnt aircraft for parts, and when we landed in North Africa in 1942 we lost a major battle to 2 German divisions and had to learn modern war on the fly.  In 1940, Vichy France declared war on Great Britain and cooperated fully with the Nazis in fighting all Allied forces.  At what point, then and where should we have sent a few green divisions?

>>Korean War - US only got involved to stop the spread of Communism which it viewed as a threat<<

USA was involved from Day One, held off the Commies with the help of a few ROK units, and gave the overwhelming majority of troops and equipment to kick the North Koreans back up the peninsula.

>>Gulf War - Could be argued as the US not acting solely for the benefit of the US however it is important to note this was a UN initiative so it is impossible to know one way or another if the US would have gotten involved on its own<<

Excuse me?  USA led the initiative in the UN and declared it would liberate Kuwait.  If the USA hadn't pushed so hard it wouldn't have happened.

I'm not sure I understand your point--we should fight a war that doesn't help make the world a better place, in our eyes?

Australia doesnt have peace keepers, and we pay our soldiers quite well. You have obviously missed my point entirely.

Looting by occupation soldiers is a war crime.  I expect punishment of the culprits, and a professional military would be glad to do it, and a great power ought to have that sort of professional soldier.  If they just brought thugs in matching pants and jackets, good to know.

What did you send to Polynesia then?  Do your troops misbehave like that? Do you expect them to?

No I was just illustrating the US has yet to join a war for the benefit of anyone but the US thus depending on them to make the exception for your country is ill advised.

Re: Russian troops to invade georgia

[The Bering (or Imarpik[citation needed]) Sea is a body of water in the Pacific Ocean that comprises a deep water basin (the Aleutian Basin) which rises through a narrow slope into the shallower water above the continental shelves.

The Bering Sea is separated from the Gulf of Alaska by the Alaska Peninsula and Aleutian Islands. Covering over two million square kilometers (775,000 sq mi), it is bordered on the east and northeast by Alaska, on the west by Russia's Siberia and Kamchatka Peninsula, on the south by the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands and on the far north by the Bering Strait which separates the Bering Sea from the Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea. Bristol Bay is the portion of the Bering Sea which separates the Alaska Peninsula from mainland Alaska. The Bering Sea is named for the first European discoverer to sail its waters, the Danish navigator Vitus Bering.

The Bering Sea ecosystem includes resources within the jurisdiction of the United States and Russia, as well as international waters in the

Re: Russian troops to invade georgia

[The Bering Sea is home to some of the world's most interesting wildlife. This sea supports many endangered whale species including bowhead whale, blue whale, fin whale, sei whale, humpback whale, sperm whale, and the rarest whale in the world, the Northern right whale. Other marine mammals include walrus, Steller's sea lion, Northern Fur Seal, Beluga whales, Orcas (or Killer Whale), and polar bears.

The Bering Sea is very important to the seabirds of the world. Over 30 species of seabirds and approximately 20 million individuals breed in the Bering Sea region. Seabird species include tufted puffins, the endangered Short-tailed Albatross, Spectacled Eider, and Red-legged Kittiwakes. Many of these species are unique to the area, which provides highly productive foraging habitat, particularly along the shelf edge and in other nutrient-rich upwelling regions, such as the Pribilof, Zhemchug, and Pervenets canyons.

Two Bering Sea species, the Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) and spectacled cormorant (Phalacrocorax perspicillatus), are extinct because of overexploitation by man. In addition, a small subspecies of Canada goose, the Bering Canada goose (Branta canadensis asiatica) is extinct due to overhunting and introduction of rats to their breeding islands.

The Bering Sea supports many species of fish. Some species of fish support large and valuable commercial fisheries. Commercial fish species include 6 species of Pacific salmon, walleye pollock, red king crab, Pacific cod, Pacific halibut, yellowfin sole, Pacific ocean perch and sablefish.

Fish biodiversity is high, and at least 419 species of fish have been reported from the Bering Sea.]

Re: Russian troops to invade georgia

[The Bering Sea is a world renowned treasure for its enormously productive and profitable fisheries, such as King Crab,[4] opilio and tanner crabs, Bristol Bay salmon, pollock and other groundfish. These fisheries rely on the productivity of the Bering Sea via a complicated and little understood food web. The continued existence of these fisheries requires an intact, healthy, and productive ecosystem.

Commercial fishing is big business in the Bering Sea, which is relied upon by the largest seafood companies in the world to produce fish and shellfish. On the U.S. side, commercial fisheries catch approximately $1 billion worth of seafood annually, while Russian Bering Sea fisheries are worth approximately $600 million annually.

The Bering Sea also serves as the central location of the Alaskan king crab and Opilio crab seasons, which are chronicled on the Discovery Channel television program Deadliest Catch.]

Schniep....do we really have to get into the same old arguement about who it was that said Iraq had weaps of MD ??   A host of entities.  NATO, UN on down.

Look at what this thread has turned into.......  Are you all crazy ?

History.

We are talking about the Russians.  Think about it......you history buffs/majors.

The greates act of Russian military involvement is WW2 and their defence of the mother land.  Other than that....they are weak...have been weak...and only dominate their week neighbors.

Geopolitically.....its a slap in the face of the US, the EU and NATO that they do what they are doing in Georgia.

They KNOW full well, the Left-wing dominated politcal posture.....even in the US....secures their actions.

Extreme Leftists......like Skoe, and Schnieple, and a few others (sorry for singling out...only for example) make excused like....well the US can so whats the big deal.

Its really troubling...because as the US does, people think Russia can do.

Is Russia setting up a GEORGIAN Govt ??  No.

Will they ??  No.

have they left as they said they would.......  No.

Will they leave.......                    ????

Hmmm
