Topic: Hypothetical military question

Lets suppose that a military unit is suddenly attacked by superior forces, and death is a likely possibility. The leading commander is a total idiot, is freaking out, and no one trusts him to guarantee their victory and survival. Lets then suppose that a more intelligent and charismatic member of the unit assumes command, simply because the soldiers trust him more and admire his control over his emotions. The resulting outcome is he develops a strategic and tactical plan to defeat the enemy, and is victorious with minimum losses. What happens to the military unit, the commander who emotionally broke, and the lower ranked man who assumed command?

We are speaking of the US military.

Re: Hypothetical military question

If the commander was that bad, and everyone knew it, after action reports will show it. If he was in control but just messing up, then the lower ranked guys are going to get busted a bit. If the officer was a nut job or just emotionally gone, then there will be a quiet removal of him from future orders, and a promotion for the officer who saved the day.

The main officer will lose either way however, his career is doomed either way.

And your point is?

Strategic orders aren't issued at the field unit level.

Any noncom with a wimp for an officer is trained to grab the wimp into a huddle and twist his balls until he issues the noncom's plan as the officer's orders.

An officer hell-bent on suicide will be abandoned by his men.

If its an American unit, barring direct involvement by the White House, air support will be forthcoming.

Deci, there are no civilians just enemy irregulars who haven't enlisted yet.

Re: Hypothetical military question

@ Justinian.

the check on a broken Officer is the Non-Com (sgt.) assigned at that level.

US Officers are totally vetted....but in a first contact situation, the executive officer (XO) does have the ability to take over the unit.....

A "Subordinate" officer, at what level ?   For larger units, it would be the S3 section of HQ, that is headed by the XO, that would most likely take charge.

Nothing would happen.  Its built into the command structure.

On the flip side, orders are issued.  If a commander on the ground sees a situation, and changes those orders on the fly to mold the situation.....two things.

1. did the change in orders jeopardize the overall objective ?
2. Did the change in orders jeopardize lives, or any other units due to lack of communication ?

Its a rare case in the US Military when this scenario of an officer breaking at command level happens.

Re: Hypothetical military question

when the shit hits the fan and a firefight is going on, its going to be the person with the biggest voice who leads, regardless of rank. Hopefully that would be an officer or sergeant, however privates have shown some presitine leadership under contact with the enemy. Todays proffesional militaries are tought to think for themselves and take the initiative, when warranted. IF your given an order however you will follow through with it. im speaking striclty on the basis of lack thereof of leadership. or leadership not taking charge.

Re: Hypothetical military question

ok speaking of personal experiance here,

we will take iraq as an ex:

u are at a check point normaly a squad sized unit 10 men or so.

u have 1 SFC with is a E-7 ( based on a scale E-2 lowest and E-9 highest ranking ) the E-7 has normally atleast 10 years in the military

then u have 2 E-6 normal having 5-10 years in the military

2 E-5's 2-7 years in military

then 6 E-1 - E-4

so u get ambushed and are out powered our gunned and out manned. well normally u take cover in around ur hmwv and return fire. and call for a QRF ( quick reaction force ( normally takes no longer then 10-15 mins to get to ur position )) the higher ranking SFC and SSG ( e-7 and the two e-6's ) take charge and position there men in a safe spot to return fire. and u will be on a surpresive fire job meaning u are to put as many rounds down range as possible to keep the enemys heads down.

once the QRF team has arived u would then out gun the enemy and take the fight to them over run there position taking all prisioners u can thus to gather intel

Re: Hypothetical military question

so no senario for defeat? I cannot believe that for any trained organised army in the world. Esp not from that size.

Re: Hypothetical military question

Little Paul I will give you a secret tongue

Historically the United States soldier has not trained for defeat, or recognizing when it is coming.

Thus poor General Custer, thus the US advances in Belleau Wood, of our recovering after the 101st was scattered to hell and back and taking their objectives, of our tenacity in the fighting withdrawal in Korea, to the Chosun Valley fighting, to that cut off mechanics group that got captured in Iraq (only after their ammunition had run out).

And we make sure the enemy knows we are there at all times. I cannot find a single time US forces have routed in the 20th century, and of course none have occurred in the 21st century.

Re: Hypothetical military question

Um read the River and the Gauntlet by SLA Marshall about the battle of the Chongdong river

US 2d infantry division of about 10,000 with some ROK forces routed by a chinese army of 300,000 in a suprise attack

US forces held out on the hilltops until their ammo ran out, then they had to run back two miles to get more.  Whole companies were annihilated, finally US forces fled by destroying their equipment and driving over their own wounded after 3 days of fighting

Phillipines 1942 was also a disaster for 80,000 troops.

Difference is, if TIME had run a special issue HOW JAPAN WILL WIN in 1942 their office would have been burnt down and the editors lynched in the rubble
