Well it depends on the lenght of the blade. There's a few places wehre a stabbing will kill you within seconds.  for anything else, if you can get to a hospital within minutes, and get transfusions and aspirations, get the blood out of the chest cavity and replace what's lost, and get surgery, you might make it if shock doesn't kill you.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

20km is quite a really long way, almost impossible to bridge, if you're injured that badly though..

As for the knife:

If you saw a man getting stabbed to death right before your eyes, one would think basic human instinct would kick-in and you would try to stop the bastard, even if he does have knife.
SO WHAT IF YOU GET STABBED?
Maybe if someone had acted instead of just shitting their pants at the sight of the knife, this man might not have died!

I once saw a small girl get launched from her  seat when the busdriver went mental on the brakes.

Busses should have safety belts.

I think the "human instinct" would be exactly the opposite. Running away from danger is a natural impulse. It's sad, but I think not a lot could have been done about it..

No the basic human instinct is to run like hell, which these people did.

Well if I got stabbed on that Greyhound it would then mean there were TWO people being stabbed to death.

3 people tried but the fact is that on a Greyhound bus 3 people trying to rush a guy with a knife are 3 people lining up to get stabbed.  There is no room to dodge or surround the guy so you're only tactic is trying to grab his hand when he goes to stab you and pray you're strong enough to hold him still.  Now maybe if they had managed to gain the element of surprise they might have been able to take him out, but as soon as they approached he turned on them with the knife.

What many people don't know is the following:
1)  the drug ecstasy was being liberally passed around on the bus just before the murderer went beserk
2)  it's strongly guesstimated he took some
3)  he came of the bus looking confused and lost
4)  he came from the area of China that has a "superstition" about the health needs of eating placentas and aborted fetuses (cannibalism)

None of the above, nor all of the above, would make him innocent but according to the current Canadian judicial system it does.
