I suppose it's impossible but is there a way you can retrieve word documents when you've been stupid enough to copy an old version over a newer version? Also we're talking about a really silly person here who has saved a new old version over the old old version. And this person wants the old new version back.

The FBI probably could do it.  I'm betting if you haven't turned off your computer there's a cache somewhere...

If it's like the way windows deletes files, by just removing the listing so the os won't recognize them<--LOL

Then try some file recovery too like Recuva, or just search google for a file recovery software.

Technically, it's possible indeed. A harddisk never exactly overwrites the same spot of your harddisk twice. But it takes weeks or even months to do. So, it's lost, I think..
The only solution you can try is Directory Snoop, but I fear it'll work in this case...

if its been overwritten, file recovery tools are unlikely to work

email a friend with the name of the file, claiming it is full of kiddie porn.  Then have your friend fwd it to the police.  They'll get a search warrant and dig out the data!
