Topic: It's a funny old world.

_So I'm on my way to university for the first time, riding the Liner from Arrahe to Steingard, and then on to Vega, the youngest habitable system in known space. Danni is over excited, she is going to be studying Exo-Planetary Geology and Geography, Astrophysics, and Stellar-something-unpronouncable, so being accepted to a University on Vega is a big deal for her.
_I already know far more about Vega, its formation, and the world it will evolve into, than I ever wanted to know, and now so are you, because I'm not suffering this headache alone!

_Some time ago, when we finally made a real effort at space travel rather than nuking each other stupid, Vega was nothing more than a big dusty donut in space, with a shining white star at the centre of the hole. One of the first scientific inter-stellar missions was to this system, naturally, and when they arrived they found not a gigantic donut but a ring system, like with Saturn, and in the gaps between the rings were the planets, seven in total.
_The largest, and furthest, is a big green-brown ball the size of Jupiter, a greedy gluttonous planet that was hoovering the outer edge of the system clean of all the gas and rock that was slowly drifting outwards. _Eventually, as we know, it would grow to engulf the sixth planet.
_Numbers five and four are primitive Earth's, currently a wash of storms, volcanoes, and beaches made of fools gold. Don't ask me about the beaches, some chemistry thing, the atmosphere doesn't have oxygen yet.
_Three is good for us, nice oxygen atmosphere (but apparently it is slightly thinner than on Arrahe), good gravity, water in abundance, but it is going to become a hot Mars one day, which means any trace we leave of ourselves will still be there when the other two planets develop intelligent life. Can you imagine cave-men with rifles?
_Two is also a nice place, but is destined to become a Venus world, and so it is the one we're using as a colony. When future astronauts come here all they will find is sulphurous air heavy enough to crush a Destroyer and heat enough to melt one too.
_Number one is a Mercury world and will be one forever, orbiting close enough to the sun for its surface to continually glow from the heat.

_So now you know, feel better? No, I didn't either.
_I don't think I'll be seeing much of Danni from now on, she's found her passion I think. I wish I had found mine. Seriously, I have't decided what I'm going to do. I'm doing Astro-Physics because that's always useful, but apart from that I have no idea what to do. I kind of like writing, I guess, so I might do a literature study or something like that. Hmm... Number three... Hmm... Maybe I'll get a sign?

Re: It's a funny old world.

12:06:79

_We're about halfway to Steingard. Danni's met someone on the same courses as she is and I haven't seen her since. I'm so bored! There's not much to really do on the liner, so I've been watching the public channels on the console in my quarters.
It got interesting last night; about half two in the morning I'm falling asleep watching the news and then suddenly I'm awoken by the sound of a banshee achieving orgasm. I think someone in quarters near me ordered some porn on a private channel and the wires got crossed.
It was entertaining for an hour or so.
_I might go and see how long I can make a walk around the Observation Deck last.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

13:06:79

_We passed through the Oort Cloud belonging to Steingard this morning, which was more than a little spooky. At this distance, on the outer edge of Steingard's gravity, light from the star is pretty weak, so the asteroids and comets and stuff are all dark. It was like passing through a curtain of shadows set against the starry backdrop of the universe, a slowly shifting mass of darkness. The liner was very quiet, I could even hear the rattling of little bits of grit bouncing off the hull.
I swear I saw something, something that was there and then gone with a shadow.

_Someone came on board this afternoon, a pretty gold ship flew parralell to the liner for an hour or so and then docked. Then security came and cleared all of the public areas; half of them were nothing more than armor-plated wedges of muscle, rude bastards. One of them seems to have taken a liking to me, and thanks to todays events he knows where my quarters are.
Fantabby!

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

15:06:79

_I'm in a lifeboat.
_Yesterday there was another clearout of the public areas, but this time in the form of a lifeboat drill. So anyway, I was stood there talking to the nice officer on duty when suddenly the liner shuddered and he got this funny look on his face, and then I was thrown into the lifeboat. I'm not sure if it was the shaking of the ship or the officer that did it. Then I heard a roaring sound, and the door closed and the lifeboat launched, knocking me out against the hatch.
_When I came to the liner was in chunks all around me, and there's this glittering stuff everywhere. I think that is the light reflecting off of scraps of metal.
There's bodies too. I can't look out of the screen.

_I've just eaten some lifeboat food. I think I'll finally be able to lose those few kilos, because I'm sure not eating this crap again. I've had cramps ever since I ate it. I don't think I'll enjoy using the toilet on this thing.

_I'm being pulled towards a planet, along with what's left of the liner, and the engines are half dead. And I don't know how to fly. Or land.
Autopilot?

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

16:06:79

_Why the hell am I here? What was I thinking? What kind of moron goes to University without knowing what they want to do? I only went because Danni was going... that and I didn't want to get pulled into mummy's world. Funny, right now I like the idea of spending the next eighty years playing Bridge, wearing the latest Wouter dresses and gossiping about who is doinking their aerobics instructor.
Sad, social climbing, back stabbing, two faced, hypocritical vampires... they all hate each other you know.
_Forgot what I was saying now... oh yes, I was panicking because I'm floating in an ocean on some unknown world with bits of liner continually dinking and clanging against the sides. There is bumping too, soft bumping and brushing sounds caused by all of the-
_Don't want to think about it.

_Oh crap! Oh crap! Oh crap! You remember how the engines were half dead? Well the engine bay thing is full of water, so now the lifeboat is sort of slanting, with the screen pointing skywards. Don't worry, I'm not actually sinking, I'm not going to drown, but: Guess which end of the lifeboat the hatch lives? That's right, at the back, under water. Now guess what is programmed to stay locked unless I can breathe what is outside.
Genius.

_I have just realised the liner should have stopped over at Steingard two days ago, so they should be looking for it now. I wonder what's taking them so long? I mean, we're in their system, right? And Liners, even bits of Liners, are hard to miss, right? And lifeboats are designed to be found, they have beacons and radios and lights and stuff, don't they?

_It's night now and I can't sleep, I'm still on Liner time. You'd think they'd put something to do in here, something other than the radio I mean, something like... a game machine! Nothing complicated like HighQ, or violent like Blitz, but something everyone likes, like Tetris! Everyone likes Tetris. I once met a guy at College called Rijs, I think he was Quantam, and I swear he made it to level seventy one.
He was hot.
Ooh, I just thought of something to do!

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

17:06:79

_Rescue!

_I've just woken up after a good meal and a good sleep, and now I'm watching my rescuers pick over the remains of the liner from the bridge of their salvage vessel. Yes, salvage vessel, the rescue vessel apparently left less than half an hour after arriving. The captain tells me that most of the lifebpoat section is still intact, and all of the lifeboats there are still docked. Technically speaking I am dead, and will remain so until the proper authorities are made aware.

_The captain is in a good mood, as is most of the crew; They get a massive bonus if they find survivors. The first officer says it is more of a bribe than a reward, a way for the rescue people to avoid scandal. It makes me wonder how often the rescue people miss survivors... the salvagers probably know, but I'm not sure if I want to know, you know?

_The salvagers have found the main engine, intact but leaking plasma all over the place from some mysterious crack that nobody can find, so they are looking forward to a double bonus IF they can fit the damn thing in the main hold. A lot of the ship is nothing but storage space and cargo holds with all manner of cranes and cutting tools built into them, but the main hold is something else. I think they could fit it in easily, which should give you some idea of the size of this hold if you have ever seen a liner engine.
Some of the crew seem more interested in the engine than the sole survivor of a terrible accident. I think I'm jealous, of an engine of all things!

_The captain says I can use his quarters untill we get to their home base, which apparently is not at Steingard but on an asteroid orbiting Steingard's closest neigbour, Beta 12. From there he'll take me on his shuttle to wherever the authorities tell him to take me, after he notifies them of my survival once we reach orbit.
If we reach orbit. The captain is worried that a complete liner engine, plus all of the other rubbish they have salvaged, may have made the ship too heavy to make orbit.
_The captain's quarters are nice, if a little small. One wall is covered in pictures of ships and their crews, but I don't see him in any of them, which is a little odd I think.
I don't like his taste in music though, mostly Wardancer's warsongs. The Camaar shanties are kind of catchy after a while, but I don't think they will make me a huge fan of accordian and fiddle music.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

18:06:79

_The ship is too heavy to reach orbit. The salvagers have been arguing all day about what to do. They can't leave the liner engine because the other salvagers, who noisily arrived last night, will doubtlessly ignore any claim they make and steal it, but they can't dump all of the other stuff either because that won't make us light enough.

_I went down to the hold again, after a dinner of what I'm told are surplus combat rations from some empire I've never heard of before; Corn or Kahn or something ike that. Anyway when I got there the door wouldn't open so I went to find an engineer... It's a long way to engineering when you can't go through the hold.
Anyway, when I got there the engineer, a Revalon can you believe it, told me that the hold had been sealed because of a leak from the liner engine. Then he showed me the radiation burn on his leg, nasty looking thing, looks like it hurts but he says that salvagers get used to it after a while, hazard of the job and all of that manly rubbish.
Nice leg though, he's kind of muscular for a Revalon.

_I was about to go to sleep as there's nothing happening, but then I had an idea: If the engine is leaking into the hold that means that there is still stuff in it right? And the engine is BIG so that means a lot of stuff, right? So why not drain it, open the hold and let the engine drain itself, making it and the ship much lighter, right?

_The captain liked my idea, especially as it meant making the rest of the salvage useless to their competitors by drowning it in highly radioactive and toxic engine stuff. You should have heard them when they realised what we were doing, I've never heard so many people swear so much! The communication officer just sat there laughing over the radio at them.

_They're going to sit here with the hold open for another day, they did tell me why but I didn't understand, so in the meantime we're getting drunk on the doctor's rather excessive supply of "medicinal" alcohol. The other salavgers have finished swearing at us and have left, gone to search the rest of the planet. I hope they find something, I feel kind of bad for them now.
Oh yeah, the engineer wants to show me his most favourite thing in the universe... not sure if I like the sound of that or not.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

20:06:79

_I just woke up in the engineer's quarters. My head feels like it's about to pop like an overcooked egg. I haven't drained myself of my own highly radioactive and toxic engine stuff yet, but I know it's coming. When I have puked I'm going to go back to sleep.

_Oh, the engineers most favoutite thing in the world is- sorry, had to puke -cartoons.
Time for bed.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

21:06:79

_Meteor shower! Very spectacular, and in broad daylight too. We're waiting for it to clear so we can take off; most of the crew are watching. If Danni were here she'd bore me stupid with
Danni

_What the hell is wrong with me? It took me seven days to realise my best freind was dead! Seven bloody days! And not just her, a whole damn liner full of people, hundreds of people, and here I am giggling and flirting like I'm on a summer holiday... Seriously, what the hell?
Maybe I should just space myself, I feel like spacing myself, I really do.

_We're going to Beta 12 now. Ther's been some trouble getting through to the rescue people, it's almost like subspace itself is nerfed, but I don't think that is the problem: This ship is O L D.
I keep thinking about Danni, and the liner, and all of those people.
I have decided to be depressed for a while.

Re: It's a funny old world.

23:06:79

_I spent most of yesterday trying to help clean the ship. I say trying to help because I've never used sonic or lazer sweepers before, and it's not as easy as it looks. The smell is quite interesting, the smell of dirt and grime being either vapourised by laser or shattered with sound.
They know it's started to hit home I think, the guys I mean... they're trying to help me through in their own clumsy manish way, which is sweet, but to be honest I'm not feeling as upset as I thought I should be.
Maybe it's because I knew me and Danni were going to drift apart anyway?

_Today I'm helping the Revalon engineer (I still find that so weird: A Revalon engineer!) do a maintenance check on the subspace transceiver as we still can't get through to the rescue ship, and we can't raise any of the other salvagers.
He does have a name, but I don't know how to spell it and he can't read or write in Common so... He can read almost everything else it seems; half the parts in the transceiver are salvaged I think. The only thing I recognise is a capacitor, which is labelled in Wardancer, which looks as ugly as it sounds. Oh well, it could be worse, it could be Quantam.

_We should be arriving at Beta 12 tomorrow apparently... that was fast! When I commented on that the Captain just smiled and said "Revalons are full of surprises".
I guess this means I'll be going home tomorrow. Not that I want to. Maybe after the... funeral... maybe after that I could go somewhere, travel a little, have a gap year and then go to University. Maybe after a year I'll know what I want to do!

Re: It's a funny old world.

24:06:79

_So at wee small hour o clock I was awoken by a red alert (I didn't even know this old clunker had any alerts) which was soon followed by the Captain as he burst into his/my quarters and dragged me to one of the smaller cargo holds which held, amongst other rusting things, a lifepod. The Captain bundled me into it and told me not to get out, then ran out of the hold, the door sealing behind him.
The ship was hit twice, and then, for the brief moment that there was still air enough for it to thrive, there was fire.
I'm now still in the cargo hold, amongst all manner of scrap material, having just watched what must have been the crews lifepods being shot to pieces. I don't know who it is but I know it's not Raiders.

_Oh hell, I think they're looking for me.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

26:06:79

_Whoever they were they watched over the remains of the ship for almost two days before finally leaving. Tying to ease this lifepod out of the hold was fun as what little is in this pod does not work properly; to be honest I'm surprised it can still hold an atmosphere.

_Currently flying towards Beta 12.
I think.
Whatever it is called it is the closest star, and it is the farthest I think this old pod can go. The engines can't go above half power without flickering and farting like they're about to blow themselves out so I'm not going to get there quickly, and I can't get anyone to come and get me because this pod has no radio of any kind, not even a beacon; all of the electronics, apart from the controls, have been ripped out.
I'm not looking forward to trying to land this thing.

_I wonder who they were? They seemed to not want anyone from the liner, or anyone connected to it, to survive... Wonder why? I'm thinking of that pretty gold ship and the two times the crew had the decks cleared, I think those are significant, but I'm not quite sure how.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

27:06:79

_I have been having some fun with the pod now that I have gotten used to the controls, making it spin and roll and stuff. I can do a pretty quick 180 now.
Getting hungry. Still can't get the engines above half power. Beta 12 doesn't look much closer either, starting to wonder if the engines are more busted than I thought.

_I still can't figure it out.
That pretty gold ship docked, the decks were cleared. The next day there was that lifeboat drill that cleared the decks, and then the liner went boom. Some people who definitely aren't Raiders finish off the salvage people but not the rescue ship... because they knew the rescue ship found no survivors, then they found out the salvage people did. Boom! bye bye salvage people.
Except us, we're still on the planet draining that liner engine. That radioactive crap must have hidden us, they thought we'd already left for Beta 12, that's why we ran into them going there.
Hold on, should I be going to Beta 12?
Ha! Like I have a choice now.

_Can't sleep, this pod's getting uncomfortable despite the zero gravity. If I stay out here much longer I'll start to waste.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

29:06:29

_I spent most of yesterday semi conscious, drifting in and out of an uncomfortable sleep. At some point I was picked up by a freighter on its way to the system I was floating towards, where I slept properly for most of the journey.

_The colony is not Beta 12, it actually belongs to the Wardancers. They're an odd bunch to look at, it seems like half of them have to wear their helmet visor bubble things closed no matter what the atmosphere. For instance the local civic centre I was taken to is a dual atmosphere building, but no matter which half the Wardancers walked into half of them would close their visors while half opened them. And they all look different from each other, and I'm not talking about Asian or Indian different, I mean really really different.
There was one tall one who was built like that Quantam guy, Rijs something, but still had the bright purple eyes and skin of a Wardancer. That seems to be the only thing they all have in common.

_I'm waiting at the port for a Quantam ship to take me home to Arrahe, I've been waiting for a couple of hours now. I wonder why the Wardancers don't use one of their own ships? I'm sure they could use the good press and political brownie points, they've been trying to be recognised as a seperate race for years now haven't they?
I've just noticed that all of the Wardancers wear some kind of armor, all I can see of them is their heads. Weird.

_The Quantam ship is here, a patrol vessel, a pretty white and blue thing that looks a little like a stretched arrowhead with the Quantam symbol painted on top.
I asked the pilot what it meant, he says it's a representation of the Hydrogen atom. I don't get it.
This ship is fast! Either that or the inertia damping thing is busted, either way I can feel some real backforce against me as we speed to Arrahe. The pilot says we're capable of 75c at a push.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

32:06:29

_Sorry it's been a while, but the funeral got to me. It was a little weird watching people cry over an empty coffin. Obviously the Undertakers had made an effort to make the coffin seem, erm, occupied, which worked quite well untill it came to bury it. I think the coffin got tilted slightly as they were lowering it into the ground, which is what caused the bricks inside to move. THUMP! After that Danni's mother couldn't keep it together anymore.
Somewhere out there, between Arrahe and Seingard, is a fine mist, a rapidly expanding cloud of particles that used to be Danni. If she was lucky, it is far more likely that... shit, what a horrible way to go.

_Been talking to my parents about taking a year out before going to Uni. Daddy thinks it's a good idea, expand my horizons and discover myself and all of that type of stuff... he got this distant look on his face when he said that, makes me wonder what he did during his gap year. Mummy thinks I'm going to go on safari or go on a shopping tour of the capital worlds, or maybe she wants me to do something like that so she'll have something "good" to talk about when she's playing Bridge? That sounds most likely.

_Just been woken up by Daddy at like three in the morning, he gave me an old business card and a keycard and said, "That's my gap-year. You can have it if you want, just don't tell your mum." Then left.
I think he was drunk or high or something. Meh, sleep time now.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

34:06:29

_Been busy preparing for my little trip, packing all of the clothes and crap mother thinks I'll need. Survival Chic she says it's called, some expensive new fad from the Revalons. I have to admit, though, this stuff is pretty good; there's this one doodad that makes food pellets when you drop dirt in one end, a blaster with a handle that vibrates when the magazine is low, a solar charger (for the blaster magazine I think), and a crapload of emergency syringes. I hate needles.
I'll probably sell most of the clothes though, too fasionable to be useful, or comfortable.

_On my way to this place on daddy's old business card. He insisted going there before I made any more plans... I haven't even decided when I'm going, let alone where!

_Wow. Just wow.
Daddy owns a Camaar ship, it's a Mako apparently. It's beautiful, kind of bronze and gold swirled together, looks more like a skin than a hull. It has these strange fins on it, makes it look like a shark.
Nice. The inside is the same, smooth and bronze and gold, everything is very round and organic, even the engine. Oddest looking thing I've seen, like a big gold- Wait a minute, how the hell does Daddy know the Camaar?

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

35:06:29

_I'll be setting off on the weekend. Daddy won't talk about the the ship in the lockup or the Camaar. I've not mentioned it in front of mother, I've thought about doing it but she'd probably freak at the scandal or something and Daddy don't deserve that.
Just been walking around town, sitting in a bar right now drinking that Quantam drink, Purity. It tastes like liquid fire. I've never really noticed how dull the town is, all grey, everywhere, no matter how old the building. I'm going to a Revalon world first, I want to see some real architecture with marble and arches and dangly crystal stuff and platinum stuff everywhere.

_Back at the lockup, just tried to stock up the ship. It ate my food. Seems it's been in hibernation for ages and me poking about woke it up. It's a fast thing, agile for its size, although for a ship it's admittedly tiny, and it eats with a tube thing that, when it wants to crack open something hard like a tin, turns black and rigid and spears the thing. It eats fast too.
I told it about my travel plans, it wanted to go now. I agreed to let it take me for a spin around town instead, let it warm up a little, and chaos ensued.
The first thing it did was scream along the main road fast enough to tip a truck with its wake, then it howled over the roundabout fast enough to get the attention of several traffic cops in their nice pursuit vehicles which only made the ship go faster.  We sonic boomed as we passed under a bridge, I think it was Victoria bridge, I don't know what happened to it but we lost the cops. I think this ship just does everything fast.

_Told the ship to not go anywhere without me, it said it can't anyway, and it needs food. I'll feed it base blocks for makers for now, it probably won't like the lack of taste but they will do the job. And they're all I can afford in such large quantities. When I leave I think I'll skip the last look around and just go straight up, very quickly.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

01:07:29

_Fed the ship this morning; It complained, alot, then told me to eat a piece of base block myself, which had less taste than a bottle of Quantam water, and I'm still hungry despite the fact that I must have over 6000 calories in my system. After that experience the ship and I agreed to step up the departure by a couple of days, so it could show me more something palatable.
Ater that I did some reading, about the ship, and here are the facts: It is called Mako in reference to a very fast shark that lived on Earth when it was still in one piece.
That's it, that's all anyone knows for sure. I'd talk to the ship but, well, it's a ship and that makes taking to it hard work. It's not stupid, oh no, it's just that... it's a ship.

_More packing, more loading, more being dragged into the office to stand there and look pretty while mother's "friends" gush and ooze falsely about my big adventure. Not one of them asked how I was.
Still haven't heard anything from Danni's mother, I hope she hasn't done anything foolish.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

02:07:29

_Decided to be brave and visit Danni's mother today, poor woman. She's coping well, I guess, but even when she smiles she looks haunted. Sitting in Danni's room right now... it smells llike her. I told Helen, that's Danni's mum's name, about my gap year, about me leaving this week, and she said nothing, just nodded and made a quiet noise.

_Nothing much to do now, not untill I leave, so I'm talking to the ship. It doesn't know how old it is but it knows there are more older ships than younger ships, but I figure it to be at least 40 if dad used it when he says he did. It can't tell me about where daddy went, it can't remember. When I asked why it said "The pilot completes"... I think I understand. I think. It's hard to be sure if what you understand about the ship is correct because you can't ask it... well, you can but it understands and replies differently... it's hard to explain...
I'm talking to ship about visiting a Revalon world first, it hates the idea, it says travelling in the major spacelanes is boring. I asked it how it knew, it said instinct. I think it just doesn't want to travel at a normal cruising speed.

_Hello, daddy's here!

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

03:07:29

_Last night was interesting; I discovered a secret: Daddy is a Camaar. It took me a while to realise how big that was.
Daddy was your typical Camaar, apart from being human, and being a typical Camaar sometimes he did his Robin Hood thing, raiding rich merchant vessels and and convoys belonging to rich and powerful compaies, the kind that owned whole planets. Well one day they raid this cruise liner for the uber rich as it circles a particularly scenic black hole somewhere near the far rim, and while there Daddy had the opportunity to "pillage" the willing daughter of an Elite shuttle merchant who was taken in by his roughness and pirate charm.
Later he learned she was pregnant, and because Daddy is an idiot (I love him, he's silly soft, but he has made some dumb decisions) he decides to do the honourable thing and marry. Prat. Anyway, the only way he could be safe from the law, as he was surely wanted by half the businessmen, merchants and govenors in the galaxy, was if he aquired a new identity, an identity which included forged documents and hacked medical files. He even had his genetic code rewritten, which had the unfortunate sideeffect of giving him Arthritis.
The scandal must drive mother mad!

_Will be setting off late tomorrow night. Mother has arranged a night in with popcorn and vids, which is surprising because I was expecting her to throw some party or something else like that that I'd hate.

"So, it's defeat for you, is it? Someday I must meet a similar fate..."

Re: It's a funny old world.

_I'm getting kind of nervous now. I went to check the ship soon after I woke up, it's excited, it keeps... shivering. I don't know why I went to check the ship it's not like I know what to check, apart from how hungry it is. It still won't tell me what it likes to eat. That worries me a little.

_I just realised I didn't tell you about my night in. We watched mostly Primo movies, Out of the Pit, Darkness Consumes, Arnor the Zombie Killer, that sort of thing. Mother genuinely didn't know he was gay, I thought everyone knew that!

_Getting ready to leave, just said bye to mother and Daddy and Helen. I wasn't expecting Helen.
Wow, that was cool! I've never actually thought about the hole in the side of the ship before, I mean, I've walked through it and used it like it's a door, but I've never wondered how it worked, it just looked like it was supposed to be there, this round, smooth, seamless hole in the body of the ship. Well anyway, it closes like a... well, like a bum hole, and then where it meets in the middle sort of heals over.

_"When I leave I think I'll skip the last look around and just go straight up, very quickly." Remember me saying that? The ship did. I felt like i was being squished into jam the whole way up, and then it suddenly turned as it left the atmosphere, which felt like my stomach was being pulled out through my side. If Daddy used to fly about in this psychopath it is no wonder he is built so big.
I swear I heard it laughing.

_Last night I slept on what looked like a rib curving out from and then back into the wall, stretching a thin layer of... skin out with it. A bit like a small trampoline. It was a good night, the hammock thing is slightly warm. The ship is going to show me what it eats today, which has made so nervous I have not eaten anything yet. I can't help but think it'll make me sick.

_The ship likes meat.
  All meat.
It's just had a mad feeding frenzy in a forest on a very young volcanic planet. Try to imagine a shark that can fly, a shark that can turn almost instantly, a shark that could scream past and concuss you with one sonic boom or splatter you with lots of them, a shark that could cut you up with a burning red beam that almost incinerates the air itself, a shark that could impale you with a mouthpart or simply suck you up.
There was this one animal, a huge dragonfly with great blue eyes and wings, that almost got away. The damn thing whizzed through the trees, zig-zagging crazily and looping almost instantly, and as the ship gave chase, causing me to be pressed hard back into the seat, I heard a strange slow crunching sound during one nasty turn that I hope came from the ship. The dragonfly actually stopped, hovered for a second as we took that turn; I think it was watching.

_Two days to Nephren-Ka, this thing is fast!

_Starting to reach the lanes now, the traffic is still fairly thin, but I don't think that will last for very long. I've been thinking about how common it is to see a Camaar ship this far from the rim, wondering if flying about in this thing could attract some unwanted attention or something like that.
We've been stuck behind a big commercial transport for an hour now, one of the huge oil ones that refine the crude en-route. I'd tell the ship to overtake but we have a patrol ship behind us, a Quantum patrol ship, and I don't want to risk this thing "racing" again.
We've just passed a small moon, the oil transport eclipsed the sun, sending it into darkness. Business must be good for the Revalons.

_Still stuck behind the oil transport, been six hours now, surely we should have hit a bigger lane by now? That patrol ship has been replaced with a Peregrine, a Revalon police vehicle. Getting a little paranoid now.

_ The Peregrine's been behind me for a while now even with traffic rolling along a bit faster now.
I've tried contacting them but either the ship can't translate it or the communication panel is broken.
_I've tried asking it but I don't think communication was ever designed to be it's primary goal.

_Now that I think about it, relavons did have a run in with camaars not that long ago. Either paranoia or racism I figure. Best be on the lookout for more patrolships though.

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

_Woke up to be greeted by a low growling sound. At first I thought it was the engines acting weird, but the slight changes in tone and the fact that it came from the comm systems said otherwise.
Apparently it's some kind of alarm, that's what I think at least. Because I've just been watching an hour worth of 3 Peregrines circling each other. They looked like....
  Uhm
Like they were exchanging information to one another in data bursts. Coming closer to perform a secure transfer, then moving away. Obviously we couldn't pick up any chatter from them.
The ship woke me up because it saw a change in the situation. Atleast, that's what I'd like to think. To be honest, I've really started giving up on talking to it at the moment. I'll go touch some buttons to see what they do now.

_Trying to figure out stuff on my own as I go. Operating some of the machinery manually proved to be difficult. I tried opening and closing one of the doors manually within the 'skin' of it by the door.
Rather challenging to say the least. Seems there are some redundant cables doing the same thing as others. But they seem 'inactive', the active ones seem to change colour, or pulse or whatever. They do some weird stuff.

_I believe each vein can transmit a range of data via some different spectrums. I guess some things aren't useless information you learn at school. "Colour, energy pulses, or even bits carried in a fluid are all capable forms to transfer energy and data."
I still detest that bitch and her smug look as she spoke.
