Topic: Does anybody know London?

I'm moving to London in September and I need to find somewhere to live but not being from London I don't really know what areas are like and I don't want to get stabbed, shot or sodomised so I would appreciate it if people who know London or have lived there could suggest some half decent areas to me.

I will be working at King's College Hospital in Camberwell, close to Denmark Hill overground rail station. I will also be living with someone who needs to be able to get to either Green Park, Oxford Circus or Piccadilly Circus.

I can easily get to Denmark Hill from London Bridge, Victoria or Blackfriars in central London. Is there any housing around these places? What is it like? and what is the stabbing, shooting and sodomy rating? (from now on SSS rating).

I have also seen that Stockwell is both geographically close to Camberwell and on a tube line to Green Park. SSS rating? The only reason I have ever heard of Stockwell is because the police shot Jean Charles de Menezes there so it does not bode well big_smile

Anyone know about any places further south? Like Clapham, Tooting or Wimbledon. How accessible they are to and from central London and the general life of the places themselves, and of course not to forget SSS.

Re: Does anybody know London?

Also, how easy is it to work in South London and live in North London? I just picked Swiss Cottage off the tube map and whacked it into tfl journey planner and apparently I could be in Denmark hill in approx 40 mins, but is it actually practical to be taking one tube and two overground trains for a commute? Is there anywhere else in North London I might be able to look for somewhere to live?

Re: Does anybody know London?

If your rich, kensington, wimbledon, fulham, richmond are good posh areas.  Swiss Cottage, Maida Vale are nice places, but again, expensive.  Living in central london will cost you a fortune, unless you live in a box on oxford street.  also look into islington and greenwich.  some good examples.

As for bad areas? peckham, bromley, hackney, harsleden, wembley, tottenham, edmonton, canning town just some examples.

dont be put off though, all cities have bad areas..  just do your research, there are some lovely parts of london, but its a city you have to be careful in.  Transports runs quite well so commuting is also considerable.

Re: Does anybody know London?

boxes on oxford street would be expensive surely? tongue

travelling by tube is easy but i cant imagine wanting to have to change train more than once on a daily commute back and forth

Re: Does anybody know London?

Scotland is cheap.  will take longer to get there, but the accomodation is VERY cheap.

Hope this helps a bit

Re: Does anybody know London?

if u look at commuting in... don't choose Luton, i wouldn't go there in daylight let alone after dark.....

oh by the way anywhere on the Bedford to Brighton mainline will allow you to get to London Bridge Station without changing trains.

Nottingham, Birmingham, Leicester, Brighton, Portsmouth big_smile

Seriously, commute:
I used to take the train from Nottingham to Kings Cross every day, I spent half as much much as all of my work friends because I wasn't paying London prices and I made twice as much money as all of my real firends because I was earning London money. wink
The only problem was that, including travel time, my workday was 12 hours long. yikes
If I had been clever I'd have moved to Birmingham, then I could use Virgin Trains and cut my work day to 10 hours. But I wasn't, so I didn't. tongue

Re: Does anybody know London?

Come living in Brussels. The train takes you to the centre of London in 58 minutes!

Re: Does anybody know London?

London? Is that not the capitol of Belgium? Or was it the capitol of Japan?

Sorry I am slightly confused...

You have claimed all this time that you would die for me. Why then are you so surprised to hear your own eulogy?

Re: Does anybody know London?

Come live in Bucks with meh.

Best place to live in the UK big_smile

Re: Does anybody know London?

Contrary to media reports London is pretty safe. Stockwell is not a great area but not bad either. I don't know Denmark Hill as a name, so assume it is a mainline station - possibly on the route to Dartford? You may be able to find places nr London Bridge

Re: Does anybody know London?

anywhere along the portsmouth - guildford - waterloo line will get you to london nice and quickly. my dad's been commuting from guildford to london for 18 yrs now, 45mins train journey each way.

Re: Does anybody know London?

Thing is when you're in London, you have to kill a guy in a fight the first day you're there or they'll think you're weak.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: Does anybody know London?

I live in London (until next month anyways)....

I had the same problem when I was looking for a place here after graduating. Generally, London is a pretty safe city as long as you don't go wandering around on your own at night looking for trouble, which is pretty typical of any big city.

I started my search in central London (very safe, but expensive) - if you're renting then places like Maida Vale, Notting Hill, Kensington and Fulham are expensive but doable depending on the size of the place you want. I couldn't find anything I liked / could afford, so moved my search to North London, looking at places like Hampstead, Belsize Park, Angel where you'll find really nice areas and affordable too. I'm currently living in Golders Green which is just off Hampstead Heath which is a great location, plus on the Northern Line which gets me into central London (Leicester Sq) in about 30 mins door to door on a good day.

I personally wouldn't advise choosing somewhere to live which involves multiple changes as it can add to your journey time significantly and at peak times is not very comfortable at all. If you're set on living in North London and need to get to London Bridge/Piccadilly Circus then I suggest sticking to places on the Northern Line.

Can't say I know much about South London though... as I didn't want to live there!

As Orbit says, do your research... look around a bit, visit a few properties in different areas and check out the commute to work before making your mind up.
