Topic: Remembering Cold War Paranoia

MACROSS was badly dubbed and cut and played on US TV in 1985 as "Robotech".  This little sequence of global annihilation nearly got it banned.  Parents were furious that it was "snuck in" at 4pm instead of airing after the family hour, 10pm like a serious drama such as "The Day After".

"The Day After" was seriously challenged too, because it depicted America using tactical nukes first.

We're pumping kids full of crap about global warming, but nothing like we used to do regarding the Cold War.  In 1981 I got a mimeographed sheet that set out a story.  I was building a bomb shelter and I was half finished when the nukes started falling.  30 people showed up and I had room and food for 15.   It went down the list-- family of five, 80 year old doctor whose wife had terminal cancer, etc.  and asked me how I'd choose.  I was in first grade.

In 1955 we didn't have Medicare but we spent tax dollars on this crap:

When you absolutely positively had to have a nuke delivered 13 miles away regardless of weather.

I understand 1/3 of the US population was born since 1980, so most people don't even remember living under the threat of the Bomb.  It explains how frivolous and disproportionate they are.

Re: Remembering Cold War Paranoia

difference, yell, threat of nukes was real, globalwarming isnt

Re: Remembering Cold War Paranoia

2 times wrong. Only on 1 occasion the situation was very critical, and that was with the crisis about Cuba. And global warming is defenatly a problem that must be taken care of..

i disagree.

Re: Remembering Cold War Paranoia

Global warming is being seriously challenged...

And whether Doomsday Clock was really at 5 minutes to Eleven, we all believed that to be true, which is the lost mood I'm discussing.   The average American believed a full thermonuclear exchange was inevitable, if not imminent.

I grew up under the Star Wars era (the weapons programme, not the films) but I only realised how carefully balanced peace had become when I saw a news thing about a new weapon the Americans were working on in 88ish; some space cannon that fired negatively charged x-raxs that could melt though stacked sheets of tank armour (I foret the metal).

I still think the balance should be worried about.

THe soviets weren't going to launch any nukes from cuba, it was a power play. The US had nukes in Turkey and the soviets wanted them out, so call the US hypocrits by putting nukes in cuba and watch them throw tantrums.

Global warming may or may not be absolute, however the means to combat it is good either way: increased efficiency with fewer resources, how can that be a bad thing?
