Compared to de facto relationships, marriage is a more effective vehicle for profit.
Gold diggers unite
Ahahahaha.
Well nowadays you can just do a pickup or find a short-term relationship.
Geese,
Okay, there's a benefit to a poor person marrying some rich dude. But what's the benefit of a rich dude marrying some impoverished or working class woman? If he really wants some, he can easily find a mistress or pay for an escort.
Carrying around a pretty bird who is a mistress or an escort doesn't quite provide you with the status that a trophy wife provides. Not that I'm rich and I know what they think, just an observation from an outsiders perspective.
Tax benefits?
Edit: Also entitlement to 50% of the other person's stuff as long as you've got a good pre-nup
Erm... Love?
The real reason for marriage is to try and prevent all those alpha males from stealing your women.
There's a good article in The Economist about this: http://www.economist.com/world/na/displaystory.cfm?story_id=9218127
Basicly marriage provides stability to the society. A married man will value security more than an unmarried one. Also kids raised in marriage tend to be smarter and more emotionaly mature.
Don't forget the sublime wedding party that comes with it!
Mawage. Mawage is wot bwings us togeder tooday. Mawage, that bwessed awangment, that dweam wifin a dweam... And wuv, tru wuv, will fowow you foweva... So tweasure your wuv.

"Erm... Love?"
That's a cause not a result. You don't have to be married to love someone.
The question is what is the point of marriage? For me it is love.
love and as well, as basically settling down, with kids and share life with another person ![]()
Marriage was originally instituted by men in patriarchal societys to 1.) Control women's sexuality 2.) Offer another route into boosting one's financial wealth and property ownership 3.) Be able to form links with other families and thus create good relations with outsiders
But, nowadays, the postions of male and female within marriages are equal, and marriages are primarily for 1.) Love and mutual companionship 2.) Stability for raising children 3.) Financial gain, still. Mostly on the part of the women nowadays, though! ![]()
LIMSI:
You are aware that marriage also existed in equal societies, like Pagan Britain some 2000 years ago?
True true
But marriage for the most part of civilisation was in favour of the men, hence multiple wives. Though many wives had a good time. Look at Sparta! In Islam countries, polygamy was encouraged, so that men could take on extra wives, where a woman had been widowed as her husband died in war, and care for them, as life as a widow was poverty.
I like Scenario B, though C does have a certain level of charm to it.

No but in the spirit of I don't give a !@#$ why should I care if someone other than me has it hard? As long as my life's ok the rest of the world can burn for all I care.
