Whhheewwwie, this is getting exciting.
Boredom leads to many things... this just happens to be one of them. This is Carl's LW&T.
I, Carl Albertus Reddington, do write this Last Will and Testament so that the United Earth Federation Economic Service may, in the event of my death, distribute my property and take such action as requested by my personal wishes, to the fullest extent of United Earth Federation law. This Last Will and Testament supersedes all previous Last Wills and Testaments that I have written, should they exist.
To my older son, Lieutenant Colonel Clay Reddington, I leave the contents of Bookshelf 1301586422, consisting of the books he left at the family residence on Webster II when he accepted his active-duty post within the United Earth Federation Military Service, in addition to the contents of Safety Box 2021684019, containing a collection of items, mostly of sentimental value, as well as a sum of two million credits. I also leave with him the title deed to the family residence on Pennsylvania Nova III, worth approximately three hundred fifty million credits at the time of writing, which shall grant him ownership over the residence, the lot on which it was constructed, and all inanimate objects on the property.
To my younger son, Master Specialist Chance Reddington, I leave the contents of Bookshelves 1301586423 and 1301586424, consisting of the books he left at the family residence when he accepted his post at the Manheim Institute, in addition to the contents of Safety Box 2021684020, containing a collection of items, mostly of sentimental value, as well as a sum of four million credits.
To my dear and loving wife, Colonel Alexandra Reddington, I leave the title deed to the family residence on Webster II, worth approximately four hundred fifty million credits at the time of writing, which shall grant her ownership over the residence, the lot on which it was constructed, and all inanimate objects on the property. I also leave her a sum of five million credits.
To the Carl A. Reddington Advanced Tactics Institute, the military officers' training center that bears my name, I leave the contents of Bookshelves 1301586419, 1301586420, and 1301586421, my personal library containing a vast collection of knowledge which I hope will be useful to future graduates of the institute.
To the United Earth Federation Military Service, as suggested by Military Service Document 20-4155, I leave all military equipment that is found to be Military Service property.
For any items I have not explicitly named in the preceding paragraphs that are found to be in my property, I leave them to my dear and loving wife, Colonel Alexandra Reddington, for her to distribute or utilize as she sees fit.
I state, under penalty of perjury, that, to the best of my knowledge, I have the authority to distribute any property mentioned explicitly in the preceding paragraphs.
If my remains prove to be untraceable, then I ask that the customary two-week search period reserved for fallen flag officers be waived, and that the whereabouts of my remains be kept undisclosed. Should my remains be traceable, or should they be located after a period of untraceability, I ask that they be retrieved, if reasonably possible, and interred at the family residence on Webster II, in a plot of land to be chosen by the owner of the residence at the time my remains are prepared for burial.
I state, under penalty of perjury, that I have prepared this document entirely of my own free will.
Signed on August 1, 2210, in the presence of disinterested witnesses General Stephen Clarke, Earth Command, and Admiral-General Logan Grimnar, Blacken Fleet Command.
Carl A. Reddington

Space has gone through two iterations and is well into its third; its complexity has likewise increased. For a new player, there's a daunting amount of storyline and background to process, a lot of which exists only in our heads. Besides the almost-200 posts that Third Story has accumulated, there's about 70 to 100 posts in First Story and an unknown number in Second Story; together, they've constructed a universe with so many branches that it would be folly to simply assume that a new player could wrap his or her head around it all.
The story centers around the space near Blacken, but the universe has curious connections to many other worlds. A quantum "bridge" links Blacken to the Earth of Chris Taylor's 'Supreme Commander' game, allowing the United Earth Federation to move troops and other assets as well as giving one of the main characters,
General Carl Reddington, a road home. Libraries open into an extradimensional L-Space, a world of endless bookshelves that connects all libraries in existence; it is through here that Carl has visited Rubi-Ka, the main world of Funcom's 'Anarchy Online' MMORPG.
There's a massive amount of history as well, much of which was never clearly elaborated upon. For example, we all know that Earth in the main universe was destroyed by Kallum intervention (the so-called "great evil"), but we were never really clear how, nor have we solidly described life before the Kallum. Wolves wrote a Kallum history for First Story that has largely been ignored or overwritten in subsequent acts. Though I have no problems with it, I recognize the phenomenon as a possible cause for much confusion for any player seeking to join the roleplay.
What if we let it all go? What if we go back to Zulu's original premise? What if we uninvent everything and start from scratch, from the base Zulu gave us back in 2006?
Before you panic, I'm not proposing a complete reset of the roleplay. Instead, I will recommend that the roleplay be forked - a la Sketchpad - and given its own separate set of threads.
The RP would start as First Story did - a universe where Earth has been destroyed and the survivors are scattered among the stars, the challenge for the characters being to find Humanity once again.
A fresh start, a new opportunity for people to join in, while still preserving everything we've done so far and running it in parallel - what do you think?
Sounds like it might be fun ![]()
Would be very strange, being here from the beggining.
Hmm, actually, I'm not too psyched about it. Sketchpad proper seems like a more interesting project right now.
I'll save the intro:
Some called them ghosts. Others called them invaders. Others called it politics. Everyone has a different interpretation of how Earth got destroyed in late 2189. Nobody knows the truth, but everyone knows that whoever, or whatever, pulled off such a catastrophic act was quite evil indeed.
We're the survivors. We're scattered across the universe; some of us are close by, others among us are billions of light-years away. We only know - or perhaps think - that we exist, and that others of us are out there somewhere. But of each other, we know nothing.
Some of us exist in small colonies. Others of us exist aboard starships that were stationed far away when the Event happened. Others of us have taken refuge aboard giant worldships. Still others are completely alone, cut off from everywhere else, plying the lonely stars with explorer ships.
This is our story. A story of death and destruction giving way to life. A story of hope amidst cruel circumstances. A story of the search we undertake, of our quest to find each other once more.
This is too Titan: AE sounding to me guys. NOT to say the idea is not without it's merit. What I think would be the most challenging to each of us, is to take the various paths that exist now, with all their skeins and tangles and twists, and weave them into a story of " death and destruction giving way to life".
Like I said, I'm no longer interested in the project - the more I thought about it, the more completely ludicrous-sounding it became. I'm keeping the prose only because to discard it would be a waste.
Yeah, I think it'd be a lot more difficult to fork Space then it was for Sketchpad
I just ignore the history:
Most of it does not affect my characters and most of it is too... well let's just say every time I try to read it I go "Whaaaat?"

In an even distanter galaxy, even longer ago and even farther away, in yet another dimension....
...oh did I mention another Universe?
"Hi, I'm from the United Earth Federation."
"But the Earth got destroyed didn't it?"
"Yeah..."
"So how can you be from the UEF? Are you from an alternate dimension where Earth didn't get destroyed, and you come here via a magic door or something?"
"No..."
"Then how can you be part of the UEF?"
"Because federations are made up of more than one planet, that's what makes them federations."
"Oh yeah, that makes much more sense! Sorry."
"[me0w?]wit."
"Excuse me? I may have made a silly mistake but that doesn't mean you can insult me."
"And what are you going to do about it, you crab-faced [me0w]wit?"
"Declare war on the UEF?"
"Yeah, like you'd last five minutes! That's right, I've played Mass Effect, I know your weaknesses!"
"What?"
"You heard!"
"I heard but I did not understand; How does playing a game give you the ability to defeat us?"
"Erm... uh-oh... you're not from an alternate universe where Mass Effect is a reality, are you?
"No, we're from the other side of the Virgo Cluster, the galaxy that looks like a Shuriken."
"Oh... have you even heard of Mass Effect?"
"No."
"Want to play?"
"Only if you can come up with someone else for me to declare on."
"How about the Krijzsosch?"
"Why the Kri- Kre- K-"
"Krijzsosch. We've never heard of them before, our allies have never heard of them before, and they don't speak English."
"They don't speak english? Then I shall blot out the stars with their ashes!"

EDIT
Which reminds me: Does anyone else like the Star Wars: Infinities stories better than the original Star Wars?
Guess not... where's Jeodan, I know he's not in the fleet but I'm a little confused as to where he is.
He's on the surface of Kandarin Prime.
TLDR: Instead of a post, I have created money instead. ![]()
(In this article, the term "UEF" refers strictly to the United Earth Federation, the political entity led by President C. Allen Riley III and largely physically isolated from the Blacken Colonial Command - if you don't know why, you need to LURK MOAR.
For the political entity holding joint ownership of the Unified Fleet and composed of the UEF, the Aeon Illuminate, the Cybran Nation, the Blacken Colonial Command, and the Cy'tan Federation (and maybe the Wardancers?), I use the term "Alliance".)
The United Earth Federation uses the credit as its main exchange medium. The credit is infinitely subdivisible, but the smallest denomination in common everyday use is the millicredit, worth 1/1000 of a credit. One credit is approximately the cost to buy half a pound of bread.
The symbol for the credit is a large capital C with a small capital R imposed in its center. In writing, if the symbol is available in the typeface being used, it is used as a prefix (e.g. if we pretend the dollar sign is the credit symbol, it would look like $400). If the symbol is not available, then it is acceptable to write the amount with "CR" as a suffix (e.g. 400 CR or 400CR). Using "CR" as a prefix (e.g. CR400) is also acceptable, though discouraged in technical writing.
The UEF Economic Service handles all aspects of the UEF's economy to some degree, and they are the issuing authority of the credit. For the most part, the credit is allowed to float according to its perceived value among consumers and business; during wartime, however, careful price controls on key commodities like staple foods, water, and energy keep its value fairly constant.
Citizens of the United Earth Federation have many banking options available to them, though over 60% of the market share in banking is kept by the Economic Service itself. The UEF Economic Service, for citizens, offers a checking account with few limits that is insured for up to 100,000 CR. The remaining market share is taken up by private banks, the largest of which is Sol Banking. These banks offer savings accounts, loans, credit, and other services that the UEF Economic Service does not fully provide (or does not provide at all).
Basic needs like food, water, and lodging are provided free of charge by the UEF Economic Service to those who need them; however, considerably more attractive options are available to those who are able to pay the modest premiums those options entail. The size of the Standard Citizen Allocation, as it is known, is based solely on military rank, with higher-rank people receiving higher-quality food and more living space. Receiving the SCA is entirely optional, and most middle-class citizens do not need it, being able to pay their own way.
Most transactions are handled through an automated system linking a citizen's identification chip, typically implanted in a citizen's right hand or left hand at birth or citizenship approval, to his or her bank account. Consequently, the majority of transactions are debit transactions, paid for directly out of a consumer's bank account. Though the UEF Economic Service offers protection against merchant fraud and imposes severe penalties for economic dishonesty, credit cards still exist because they add another layer of consumer protection and additonally allow consumers to spend more than they have, providing they can pay the difference later.
Credits are accepted throughout UEF territory and throughout most territories with which the UEF has a formal military or trade agreement.
Within UEF territory, there is a flat 25% tax on all sales, decreasing to 15% for active-duty soldiers and officers. There are no other taxes or tariffs.
In Aeon territory, the UEF credit is accepted at the exchange rate at which a transaction is first proposed, plus a 5% tariff, a 1.25 CR per-transaction processing fee, and all applicable Aeon Illuminate sales taxes.
In Cybran territory, the UEF credit is accepted at exchange rate plus 50% tariff and Cybran sales taxes; it is much more economical to convert to local currency first, as the associated fees are much lower.
In BCC-controlled settlements, the UEF credit is accepted at exchange rate plus Blacken sales taxes (if they exist). There are no other fees or tariffs.
Though most transactions are automated and electronic, a physical currency protocol still exists. The UEF Economic Service creates types of physical currency units. The first type, the coin, is used for low-value transactions, typically sub-credit transactions. Coins are made of lightweight metal, the exact formula being proprietary, and are issued in the following denominations:
0.001 CR (1 mCR) - This coin is rarely used due to its low value (less than the metal composing it).
0.005 CR (5 mCR) - This coin is rarely used due to its low value (less than the metal composing it).
0.01 CR (10 mCR) - analogous to a penny.
0.025 CR (25 mCR) - rarely used due to its unconventional denomination.
0.05 CR (50 mCR) - analogous to a nickel.
0.1 CR (100 mCR) - analogous to a dime.
0.25 CR (250 mCR) - analogous to a quarter.
0.5 CR (500 mCR) - analogous to a half-dollar piece.
1 CR (1000 mCR) - analogous to a dollar coin or a euro coin.
2 CR (2000 mCR) - analogous to a two-euro coin.
The second type, the fixed-denomination note, is used for medium-value transactions. Fixed-denomination notes are made of a thin sheet of durable polymer measuring 127x67 mm. The front and back of each bill are the same when the bill is flipped across the y-axis. The center of the bill is printed with the denomination, both as an abbreviated numerical representation and as full text. Every bill has a serial number, and every bill has a pair of OCR strips along the top and bottom that encode the serial number and denomination in binary form, along with a checksum. (In the images linked, all the bills have the same serial number, to save myself some headache - in the 'real world', two bills with the same serial number would indicate counterfeiting.) Bills larger than 100 CR are severely restricted and are typically used only for internal Economic Service transactions; it is a felony for most citizens to possess them without EconServ authorization.
The denominations are as follows.
1 CR

5 CR

10 CR
(http://atomicinf.homelinux.org/~atomicinf/uefmoney/uef%20bill%2010.png)
20 CR
25 CR
50 CR
100 CR - Largest bill freely available to most citizens. Note the change in format.

200 CR
250 CR
500 CR - Note the clear warning in red and the change in the legal tender notice.
1000 CR (1 kCR)
2000 CR
(...etc...)
20000 CR
25000 CR - Note the use of 25K as numerical representation.
50000 CR
100 kCR
250 kCR
500 kCR
1000 kCR (1 MCR)
(...etc...)
200 MCR
250 MCR
500 MCR - Note the simultaneous use of 500M and 0.5B. Largest note ever printed - larger denominations are theoretical only.
1000 MCR (1 GCR, written as 1B)
2000 MCR (2 GCR)
2500 MCR (2.5 GCR) - Largest note possible. Larger denominations would not fit in the barcode area.
The third type, the custom-denomination note, functions more like a pre-written check. It has a fixed value set at printing and authorizes a single transaction between two bank accounts specified on the bill. Though almost completely replaced by electronic transactions, they are still legal tender (subject to restrictions), and the basic form is still used for bank transaction receipts.
Example of a custom-denomination note:

Example of a bank receipt:

God damn, Matt. You're a flippin' genius!
I have spoken to Arocalex, he is in turkey. He also said what lack of effective computer time he had so he has given me control of his character for a short time. Fokker, I will have Joedan meet your guys soon.
And fokker, where are you? In story.
I was thinking the destruction of the Mimic would create confusion, and some anger of the Kyrozch upon the bugs in the universe that Carl & Argus are in.
My thoughts are they would be upset for having been used as a pawn and strike back at the Bug agents within their ranks. Perhaps creating a civil war between those that feel the threat by the bugs greater than those offended by it. Though this would not stop any conflict in the future with the Kyrozch ranks, enough they would withdraw their attacks on teh UEF. And some symbolix gesture of a cease fire from the faction wanting to fight the Bugs. Of course, the Scion will be there to reinforce them if they do. Thus a great battle can be fought between the "Bug" Kyrozch and the "Scion" Kyrozch with everyone basically allowing their plotlines to advance along side this.
Also, I would suspect that my next Kyle Gibson post would show the Scion alligned worlds to exceed the 600-700 range now, and possibly one the the "Major races". If there are any objections to either of these, I'd like to discuss before I go off and post.
Just FYI, you may want to include in that post that Kyle learns of the Talus Republic's (winning the current Talus Civil War by a growing margin with UEF help) decision to revoke Talus citizenship of anyone affiliated with the Scion. He is a Talus Citizen, right? Or am I thinking of someone else?
Kyle has his family with him, is leader of the CotC sect, who is administrating the Civilian and diplomatic side of the Scion worlds. He's akin to Moses to the Scion followers. So, any clamp down on the Scion Pilgrams, will prolly be worthy of a story of it's own. Mind you, the Talus Empire has been basically fragmented to the point that 30% of the former empire are now under the Scion, with more willing to flock the more the two remaining factions want to fight.
The problem with having the Kyrozch splinter as you suggest is that it creates issues with the Rubi-Ka story arc which I was planning to wrap up, as one of that story arc's fundamental assumptions is that the Kyrozch don't splinter. Or surrender, for that matter. Or form alliances.
The other problem with having Scion and Bug agents within the Kyrozch ranks is that, given the nature of the Kyrozch hive mind (potential spoiler: controlled by the will of the Fisher King, who's essentially untouchable at this point in time), it's frankly impossible to impersonate the Kyrozch while the Kyrozch are around.
Timescale-wise, are you sure you want to double your empire's size in about an hour or two's timespan? That sounds a tad... out of scale, especially considering the dearth of humans in the Blacken universe (though you _could_ make a case for about 80% of them being Cy'tan...)
[As this roleplay is Lesser Sketchpad Standard compliant, you are free to ignore these concerns if doing so will allow you to write excellent prose.]

Currently looking for Jeodan, but for the sake of story I had to look in the wrong place. You know that planet the UEF fleet flattened a couple of posts back? There, heading towards/trying to catch up with the fleet, mainy because as far as the Wardancers know that is where the largest concentration of Cy'Tan ships are (outside Cy'Tan space of course) and so that is where they currently have the best chance of finding him or being directed to him.
Ok started progressing some story.
Well, since the last report from Kyle Gibson, you have flattened several more worlds, on top of the Kyrozch attacks on the perimeter bases... so that was the reason to escalate the growth.
Plus, if you guys read back a number of posts I did before, I have a whammy prepared.. I hope that you guys caught the hint... and I'll drop it again..
**** Charles looks up at Kyle,
Well, really, somewhere between one and a half and two and a half worlds. And the Kyrozch have been at it for a little bit now. Keep in mind that it's almost invariably easier to destroy stuff than it is to create stuff... unless each Scion colony has less than about ten or twenty thousand people (not just humans) each, in which case I'd buy that (but why!?).
