I read somewhere that an ounce of gold costs $400 to produce, but sells for $900 at the moment.

depends on the gold source.  You can hack gold ore out of rock and crush the rock and chemically suck the gold out of the powder.  Or you can find gold sand and wash the gold out.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.
