Topic: funny, in a disheartening sort of way

So yay, betancourt, french-columbian (not as hot as the mix suggests) politician rescued, no shots fired (darn?). promotions all around.

here's an article offering a poignant detail on the stealthy infiltration:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121538827377131117.html?mod=todays_columnists

1. special forces brought in a helo.
2. they said they were International Humanitarian Mission, a fictitious NGO sympathetic to the FARC.

ok, so?

3. FARC believed that a NGO would be complicit in their kidnapping/hostage-taking.

kind of lends to what Uribe said before, that some NGO's are just fronts.

shocking?

[paddlepop] no, this is old news.

pretty old story with the likes of

WHO - world health org? no, birth control of 3rd world nations org
Rock the Vote - get young voters out who'll prolly vote Dem.
random 'human rights' org - gay rights lobbies

and on and on.

i don't see the novelty of it.

it's not like i'm saying i see the Peace Corps putting up mercs to take over small countries like Equatorial Guinea (which would be Adam Sandler funny).

at the same time, besides Save the Children Foundation, i wouldn't give a dime to any.

it's always nice to see courts living up to their purpose:

"Since the late 1990s, the NGO practice of dragging the military into court on allegations of human rights violations has destroyed the careers of some of the country's finest officers, even though most of these men were found innocent after years of proceedings. "Judicial warfare" turned out to be especially effective because under legislation pushed by Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy, "credible" charges against officers put at risk U.S. military aid unless the accused was removed. The NGOs knew that they only had to point fingers to get rid of an effective leader and demoralize the ranks. Given this history, it's not surprising that the FARC thought a helicopter from an NGO was perfectly natural."

i know courts were about the last thing to go before the Roman Republic crashed...even with great as minds as Cicero there up til the end. and when courts are just pretenses for power plays, the armies and dictators aren't far behind.

Re: funny, in a disheartening sort of way

Disgusting and with Dems in control they are trying to pretend FARC has the moral high ground

NOT ONE WORD for years about FARC holding Americans hostage. Whores and traitors.

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

Re: funny, in a disheartening sort of way

Agreed, they ignore the atrocities FARC has done, will keep doing, and the hostage taking/keeping of AMERICANS.

Re: funny, in a disheartening sort of way

since US-massacres in Vietnam and recent cases of war crimes in iraq, it is better to charge those "finest officers". in 8 years of Bush II the "finest officers" were able to slip out of offical investigations. the lack of US charges are a shame for the western world and our leading nation. so the NGOs filled the gap and started wild charges on "ghosts", who were usally US-personal. this will go on until the US-administration starts to play by the rules of the business: tortures&killings are ok as long as you keep it secret for a loooong time. in the last 2-3 years even the Bush administration realized that and started projects of cooperation with regimes to torture and kill in secret. that went public, but no pictures -> no good publicity in the international media, so who cares? nobody!
