Is it one gold for one research point?

Yes.  Race research bonus also effects this (i.e. +50% research = 1.5 RP for 1 gold, -30% = .7 RP for 1 gold)

Also should note that gc fund for research gets converted at 10% of total amount each tick. It's not instant
