Topic: War on the horizon! SB 24 - 95 vs 97

The apparent hubris of the historical conquerors in their early attempt to annihilate the Olympian gods rather than just punish them, and the subsequent bites and stings by pesky flies and ticks deemed unworthy to be swatted yet still slowly draining their pristine blood, had left them with a bitter after taste and fatigued. It had been some time since they had melted their weapons into tools to farm and make porcelain.

While some prospered in these times of peace, in particular the Mongol hordes seemed increasingly prolific in their new crafts yielding them enormous fortunes, others dwindled and lost interest. Some of these losses, such as the leader of the Punjabi Sikh who even in his first life was lackluster in his fortitude let alone his second, were wept for by none; rather, they were counted as blessings. Yet others, such as the loss of the great empire of Rome's greatest emperor and womanizer, were deeply lamented.

It was at this time that the remaining council of conquerors decided to further refine their inward perfection, and quite succesfully. The vast economic power generated by the few remaining councilmembers, with treasure shining so blindingly that the rays reflected off of its image shone to the furthest corners of the galaxy, was the envy of both mortals and immortals.

So it happened that one day, the council was stirred by a message carrying with it the stench of some of the galaxy's foulest creatures.

Napoleon Buonaparte cried in an outrage: "Merde! Zhese arrogantes chienes! How dare zhey canzel on us when we mean no harm!"

Julius Caesar, upon recognizing the shade of the Sikh whom he had once called his brother (though, retarded and from another mother), exclaimed: "Et tu, Scorpe?" And his disappointed gaze was drawn to the ground under his feet, the level their former brother had sank to.

However, Timur Lang and Temujin Borjigin, also known as Tamerlane and Genghis Khan, respectively, both unparralelled on the battlefield during their first life, had, signalled by many bad omens, foreseen such a move by these foul creatures, and had already curtailed the council's spendthrift days in advance. They knew that if they could rely on these funds, losses might be kept to a minimum, at the very least...

Calmly they signalled their brothers to regain their composure, for good warriors must keep their minds calm so that their strikes may be all the more deadly, and turned to their leader, the wise Xerxes, for consultation.

Xerxes examined what was to be the battlefield. Having learned his lessons from the battles of Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea, he had already begun to draw up a plan for the coming campaign. A bloody one it would be, but he believed that together with his few left over brothers, united, he might stand a chance. He pondered, should they use lowly tactics such as scorched earth or guerrilla warfare, or pray to the Zoroastrian, Tengri, Roman, Muslim-Catholic gods for kamikaze winds or divine inspiration, so that tides might be turned in their favour. What would be required to make this battle the Waterloo or Moscow of these foul creatures? He would have to come up with a good plan, and time was ticking...

"Quelles couardes, cettes chienes," Napoleon observed, having calculated the alotted time frame at which hostilities were to commence. "Do zhese men not have zhe balls to fight us comme un homme d'honneur?"

Timur, outraged, cursed their enemy's choice to force a nighttime campaign, swearing to wreak havoc on them. "The carnage will be the likes of my Georgian campaigns, let us rush to battle and get this over with!"

"My Chinese minions used to have this saying: "he who hastens into battle is quick to lose his head"," so retorted Genghis Khan. "Of course, we Mongols thought differently and showed their decadent behinds the power of our fast horses and even faster strikes, teaching them otherwise. However, my friend, you and I have most experience being on the offense. Here we find ourselves on the defense, a situation that complies to different rules, so let us plan accordingly."

Julius Caesar concurred. "When on offense, it might be wisest to pray to Mars and follow his doctrines. Now, however, let us pray to Minerva, and follow her wisdom."

As the words of his brothers had found succes in swaying the thoughts of his councilmembers, Xerxes let out a sigh of relieve. "Regardless of the cunning choice of time and other backhanded tactics our enemies might employ, we come well prepared and well motivated. We shall shred these foul beasts to pieces with our garden hoes and pottery benches. Now let us soothe our minds with some milk of the poppy, so that our courage and our fantasy may merge into a force never seen before. Let us shake the fundaments of history once again!"

"Ready the trebuchets! Get the catapults in place! Cavalry, ride for the flanks! Infantry, pack up and join your battalion, march!" And a loud "HUZZAAHH!" arose from the men.

So the battlefield resounded as the units were going through their preparations and being positioned. Napoleon, Caesar, Timur, Temujin and Xerxes oversaw the process from their strategic encampment.

"We have done our part in preparing strategies and building up our units strength, now it all depends on the courage of every individual soldier and the tactics of our on-field officers. A machine is only as sturdy as its weakest component. Oh gods, may you transform even our weakest component into the finest adamant!"

Re: War on the horizon! SB 24 - 95 vs 97

And so the day had come, the battlefield was about to erupt in a chaos that would cut short the lifes of many a promising young man. The last preparations were underway: Xerxes inspected his lines, mostly consisting of his prided Immortals, one last time, handing out milk of the poppy left and right so that his beloved men would feel no fear in battle.

Napoleon gave his men a last speech before the battle would commence: "Mes bonhommes, let us show zhese filzy chienes zhe true French elan!" and a loud "Hail ze emperor!" arose from his ranks.

At the same time, Temujin and his hordes were saddling their horses on the right flank. "Today, we ride. Be it towards victory or towards the next land of eternal blue sky, I do not know. But we will ride fiercly; once again, the hordes will strike fear into the hearts of the people! May our arrows be swift and never miss their targets, may our strikes be confident and find our targets necks!"

Timur and Caesar had already finished their rounds and joined their cavalry on the left flank. "See those puny men on our enemy's right flank?" Caesar gestured to Timur, "those are the followers of he who had once been our brother. Do you smell the stench coming off of them? The same stench I had smelt coming from those foul Gauls when I wiped them out at Alesia. 't Is the stench of cowardice and fear, mixed with faeces and not having washed in weeks."

Timur replied "I have dealt with betrayers before, let me have him! Tokhtamysh was of royal blood, a true descendant of him who I may now refer to as my brother and therefore deserving of proper treatment. These foolish traitors lack such royal descent and will not be met with the same honours. Rather, let me have him, and I shall build towers of the skulls of his men!"

Re: War on the horizon! SB 24 - 95 vs 97

The battle had started with an exchange of blows. Temujin's cavalry had poked at the lines of the left flank of the army of foul creatures. As soon as the unsightly creatures started their pursuit, the Mongolian horsemen retreated tactically, forcing breaks in the formation of their opponents. Uneasiness quickly spread among the troops of the foul beasts, feeling like sitting ducks being picked off from afar. And, as Temujin had earlier predicted, the preoccupation of their roused minds led to clouded judgement and harsh decisions. In the spur of the moment, a feint of Xerxes' infantry caused the main host of Emperor Nero's cavalrymen to break formation. Timur and his Chagatai horsemen, having been instructed by Temujin, had readily awaited this moment: they struck as soon as they observed the break in formation, reproducing carnage as witnessed at the battle of Ankara.

After news had reached of the Timurid troops having slaughtered many of Emperor Nero's cavalry in a surprise attack, Scorp's puny warriors panicked and in their disorganisated state mounted a charge against Xerxes' infantry. Little did they know Xerxes had anticipated such a cowardly attempt, employing a tactical retreat in the middle of his ranks, slowly drawing in the bulk of Scorp's troops.

Before Scorp's slow brain realized what was happening, the trap had already sprung, and he found himself surrounded on all sides. The spears of Xerxes' well-organised Immortals slowly advanced upon Scorp's panicking troops, whom in their terror even did not deter from sacrificing their fellow savage beasts. Yet none managed to escape the onslaught.

Timur scoffed at the loss of his prey, but appreciated the perfection at which Xerxes' manouvre had been performed. Even more, he already had his eyes fixed another target.

Re: War on the horizon! SB 24 - 95 vs 97

As Scorp's troops had been forced to retreat and wait for reinforcements, the battle swayed in a different direction. Timur's massive Chagatai horde was wreaking havoc, picking off targets one at a time; however, in the meantime, his supply chains were being harassed by unknown assailants.

On the council's right wing, things were looking positive as well. The flurry of arrows let loose by thousands of Mongol composite bows was easily sufficient to force failure after failure from Cullen's measly attacking forces. As Temujin was observing the senseless sacrifice of these barely trained troops, a young officer from one of his reconnaissance units rode up to him.

"Oh greatest of great Khans, oh ruler of the eternal blue grasslands, I come with news from our forward outpost. Scorp has ordered a forced march and headed to our side of the battlefield. Our furthest outposts have come under attack by Scorp's reinforcements who have attacked en masse, and we have been forced to retreat!"

"Be easy, my young one, for retribution will be served momentarily; Scorp will not come far. Knowing him, he will follow the path of least resistance, a path that we have willingly laid out and and will consequently lead to his swift demise. We will see the foul beasts he leads burn to embers, for this we have prepared our finest Greek fire. Knowing Scorp's hotheadedness, his troops should fare well as kindle and nourishment for our flames."

Only moments later, massive flames sprouted skywards from the right flank, visible from all across the battlefield, and the leftovers of Scorp's army had once again been forced to retreat, regroup and wait for reinforcements. At the sight of the massive flames, Xerxes nodded approvingly. "Had it not been for the unbearable stench, we'd been having flame-grilled beast for dinner tonight."
