So far, Suicidal Sushi tried it out, messages are not showing up for him and i can see his messages, i dont know why...IC Death was third to join, we exchanged text msgs just fine

I don't think people are looking for yet another way of communicating. People tend to use what they are used to.  I think that it's the reason irc is used less and whatsapp is used more and more.

Also the buggy IRCwebclient and the base knowledge you need to use irc via a separate piece of software is keeping new players from using it

Nonetheless your suggestion looks like a nice alternative for what we already have.

Instead of enforcing a communication medium let's just provide choices and have the family figure out their preferred means of communication.

like i said im not suggesting it as primary communication, but i discovered this app like a week ago, its mainly for gamers only and i love it, it has awesome features, altho its till in beta phase

it can let you know what games they're playing (for ic, its not possible since its browser), let you know if they're on twitch live, etc

i already set up channel for IC and it will be there forever
