Topic: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

Way to go MIT, the one university I would love to go to.

Essentially they made an off the shelf type solar reflector which heats up water to incredible temperatures.

Essentially a 12-foot network of shiny mirrors

Who needs solar when oil oozes into the earths crust from the warm gooey centre

if you want renewables come buy them in germany:)

flint.. does it matter in any kind when a good thing that is researched has been subsidized or not?

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

Yes it does matter.

Say I look at the true cost of various powers.

We will call them A, B, C, and D

A costs $15 a unit

B Costs $25 a unit

C Costs $17.5 a unit

D Costs $50 a unit

Now A creates the most pollution, D creates the least pollution, C creates the second most pollution, and B creates less than C but more than D

The cost is factored in several ways...

1) Manpower needed to create the energy. In low wage nations this is not especially high.

2) Resources needed. In resource heavy nations this is not especially high (usually, United States being an exception)

3) Production costs of the energy producer.

Solar may not have a high manpower cost, but the cost of producing it has always been so high as to boggle the mind why we even try. The resources needed for it is admittedly only sunlight, so in that regards it's cheap also. But manufactoring costs of it has always made it factually UNPROFITABLE even by the now high energy costs we suffer now. It actually costs more than it makes over it's life span.

But since some people make solar panels, and since they pay for campaign contributions, we got subsidies. Subsidies make it look like, to the ignorant, that a thing is cheaper. You, and the rest of society are paying the bill however to make this product cheap enough to 'look' like it is going to be able to return on it's investment.

Btw Germany has nothing when compared to my region. With dozens of Dams and as a benefactor of Bonneville as well we are one of the cheapest energy rate locations in the United States.

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

I see it from another point of view then i guess. If someone has a good idea where everyone in the end would benefit from it should be supported. In the end it does not matter who supports it.. let it be the goverment.. let it be private investors.
There are just things in life where money should not be the major factor.
The good of mankind is one of those things imo:P

Congrats to you that you live in a good region then flint. I personally don

Ours was made in the 50's and 60's. I think your nation was still recovering from WWII then tongue

running behind facts einstein :

The dear student of MIT did not invent this, it alreay exist, but they did some research on it and it shows that there are ways of working arround the expensive parabolized mirrors needed to focus the beam, and some other expensive materials.
http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/solar-dish-0618.html

The main problem for this tech ist hat it does not need sunlight like the solarcells we know. It needs sunbeams to create warmth. Thus it is only usable in very sunny/hot placed, ( deserts or so).

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

We've got plenty of those

Not many people know this, but I own the first radio in Springfield. Not much on the air then, just Edison reciting the alphabet over and over. "A" he'd say; then "B." "C" would usually follow...

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

is this like that huge solar power facility they are building in spain?

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

actually the biggest being built is in portugal

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

dailytech had a good page on it, mostly the comments. they were talking about archimedes' ole mirrors he used against the Romans.

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

Why build a solar panel in Portugal when they already have Ronaldo's earrings?

Je maintiendrai

Re: Seems Solar Power can replace some power plants after all

He is in england... we only have his fat sister
