The guide talks about Alliances, Wars, and NAPs, but no mention of Diplomatic Planet Agreements.
How do they work? I'd rather find out from a knowledgeable source than learn by sending something to someone in-game and getting screwed over somehow.

It basically means you can sign NAPs yet still be able to trade out planets if needed.
You can officially trade planets??
So if someone has a couple planets in system X, I can formally trade them some of my planets in system Y without having to worry if they'll renege? Is that correct?

If you are NAP'd, then yes, you can agree to trade planets.
As long as they aren't requesting specific planets in compensation, and you're not blatantly trying to swap planets so you can get positioning on someone, this is fine

What would be the point of trading planets if not precisely for a gain in strategic positioning for both or either pNAP'ed parties........?
In the past it's typically been used when someone accidentally explores into the core of someone who is napped. Trading for specific planets with a family that isn't your own is classified as an Illegal Alliance, just as requesting specific planets as compensation is.
Yep, typically you'd have a core agreed in your NAP, if you find someone that you're NAP'd with in your core you can trade that planet in your diplomatic planet agreement page.
