Topic: Mentorship

Here's my last idea to help save / build IC player membership.

Allow a mentorship function, whereby a player chooses a family member to be a mentor, and by selecting a mentor, there is joint access and management of the player's empire by both player and mentor.

Whatever the mentor does is recorded in both the player's and mentor's in-game personal log, so the player can refer to the log when asking the mentor (via in game message) what they did and why.

This would allow a new player to learn how to play in a regular galaxy with help from a veteran mentor.  This would also provide the family a more productive and effective empire, which would work against the tendency of new players being seen as liabilities to a fam rather than as assets.

One misuse of this function would be veteran players who don't really need mentorship using the mentorship function to have other more active family members just manage their empire for them.  But, again, is this so bad?

Re: Mentorship

We had a mentorship program in the past and it was rarely used (when it was used 50/50 shot it was in an abusive fashion)

What you're describing is legalized account sitting...not mentorship

Re: Mentorship

There is a system that is setup for mentoring its called
Supernova. Play in supernova and help the new players there.
Supernova was set up for new players and dum players like me.
In supernova you can  have players attaker you and explain to them what they did  wrong . Teach them how to play in starburst. Explain game rules in both galleries.
Instead of just beating the crap out of the new players tell them how you were able to do it.

Re: Mentorship

New players want to play in the other gals too, though.  Set-up system for what undeath said - the 'account sitting' thingy, except only for the empire, not the player's account, of course.

Set it up so a fam member whose interest it is that the new player's empire succeeds can help manage it.

And have a log of activity done by the mentor so the new player can follow what's going on and learn from it.

If vets misuse it, so what.  Vets 'sharing' each other's empires will increase game-play activity.

(The reason the old mentorship system didn't work is because new players wanted to play in the regular galaxies, not the galaxies for noobs.  And so then the tendency to kill-off new players started, which only hurt IC community membership).

Re: Mentorship

Oh, and there's something else we could do with this 'empire sharing' thing...

(I know I said I wouldn't give new ideas until I see money from Stefan, but this is along the lines of the idea of this thread, NOT a new idea  tongue  ).

If you set up empire sharing, you could create new op at the same time called 'conduct cyber attack' or something, where if successful, the opper gets to trigger a random command that messes with the target's empire

List of actions might include:

canceling the construction of portal at target planet
removing defenses at target planet
recalling stationed units at target planet
recalling a fleet (from list of fleets on the move)
cancelling construction of units (from a list of units being constructed)

the list could go on and on

The cyber attack op would be easy to set up if an 'account sharing' mentorship system were set up.

Okay, so NOW, no more ideas!!@

Grrrr~!~!

That's supposed to happpen in SN? I attacked a planet-fat empire much larger than me early in the round to see of I could siphon off 3 planets.... and failed. But all I got was a message threatening retalliation if I tried it again, probably because I was like 20% of his NW and would drain his morale sad Didn't learn much from it other than ppl build lasers sometimes.

But isn't this basically what PinWheel used to be about? I remember playing there and getting mentored by the fam leader and getting advice.I learned a lot back then and then forgot it over the years I stopped playing.

Re: Mentorship

The only mentorship program there ever was was a gal made and new players told to go play there.

Sometimes it was called Milkyway, sometimes Supernova, sometimes Pinwheel, etc...

Re: Mentorship

Fyre I thought I remember you from pin wheel.
Im playing in  Supernova now as just for funn.
Message me there and we can talk but there are better player than me there.
Colorado or scorpion  are good players try asking them. If
I remember correctly you were a good player in pin wheel well better than me.
There are a lot of good players in supernova  just star sending messages  and asking questions.

Re: Mentorship

Okay now I remember more: PinWheel was an actual competitive galaxy but there was a training galaxy all new players had to graduate from first! You started off in a fam with a mentor/leader to show you the ropes and you automatically graduated (read: "kicked out") when you acquired like 30 planets or something. I remember going to war with the mentor of another fam (with my mentor's amused blessing) and just commandeered his nicely built planets before disappearing from the galaxy, taking all those buildings with me into oblivion... good times.

Re: Mentorship

Virgo! The noob Galaxy was called Virgo bitches!

Modestus Experitus

Arby: A very strict mod, reminds me of a fat redneck who drives a truck around all day with a beer in one hand. I hated this guy at the start, however, I played a round in PW with him where he went as an anonymous player. Our fam got smashed up and everyone pretty much left. Arby stayed around and helped out the remaining family. At the end of the round he revealed himself.... My views on him have changed since. Your a good guy.....

Re: Mentorship

I remember  Virgo just could not remember the name.
My son just graduated from college so I started to use his computer to play
Ic. I had no idea how to use a pc except to put items up for sale on eBay.
I allmost got thrown out of virgo for spamming..  I did not know. How to type or any of the computer terms.
When I read the rules I did not know what spaming ment . I did not want to break any of the rules so I kept asking the mod. She thought I was being a smart ass.
