It should always be discussed
The state of Texas under Governor Perry required all teens to get Gardisil, a vaccine against HPV which is genital warts
About 1 in 10 million people with HPV will develop cancer from it. A very treatable cancer.
So supposedly all the teens in Texas are safe from that, but, it appears Gardisil has some pretty intense complications for some people.
So they were ordered to suffer that rather than run the risk of developing a treatable cancer. And it looks like the risk of complications is more likely than the cancer in nonvaccinated populations.
This sort of thing is hard to prevent if we pretend and declare that the Science Is Settled and Vaccines Good.
Vaccines are an industrial product made for profit. They are unsafe until some regulator forces safety on the sales team.
Now measles, we have a historical record of school districts full of kids with no vaccine, and the sweeping epidemics that can occur.
The measles vaccine can be sold as a sensible reduction in risk. But that is a discussion that should happen every time.
OH, and it's totally ridiculous for people who believe in open borders to whine that dozens of thousands of US citizens won't vaccinate their kids. Dozens of thousands versus dozens of millions. Math, dudes.
The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.
