I'd qualify that statement to add that such public funding should necessarily be extracted those from  who are most responsible for or profiteering from systemic ill-health.   In other words, rather than the victims or those who are least responsible for the ill-public-health pandemic paying the taxes from which public healthcare is funded, those who are profiting from or causing the public ill-health pandemic should be the ones paying the vast share of the taxes needed to fund public healthcare.  Unfortunately, most tax systems around the world place the burden of funding public health care on the victims of or those who are not responsible for the ill-health pandemic.  This tendency results from an archaic system of taxation designed to empower, benefit, and essentially incentivize the perpetrators of all sorts of social ills.  For example, the healthcare industry itself is incentivized to be complicit with the parties responsible for poor public health pandemic, which exacerbates of the poor public health pandemic, essentially allowing for systemic violation of the Hippocratic oath on the part of all doctors and healthcare professionals everywhere, and least of all creates a situation whereby there is an exponentially rising cost to the victims or those least responsible for the poor public health pandemic rather than the perpetrators of it.  Insanely, this makes health insurance a prime cause and profiteer of the poor public health pandemic.  Public health care in its current form is a symptom of the wider systemic fraud plaguing contemporary society.

If they didn't bother to do anything then the same outcome would have happened, but Germany and France would speak Russian. Until they rose up in a popular revolution in circa 1990, which may or may not have been bloody and plunged europe into a third major war, the outcome unknown.
