Topic: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

“CDC’s new estimates show that there are about 20 million new infections in the United States each year, costing the American healthcare system nearly $16 billion in direct medical costs alone,” said a CDC fact sheet.

The CDC study—“Sexually Transmitted Infections Among U.S. Women and Men: Prevalence and Incidence Estimates, 2008”—was published in the March edition of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, the journal of the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association.

The study distinguishes between “incidences” of a disease, which is the number of new infections in a year, and the “prevalence,” which is the total number of new and existing infections.

“In 2008, there were an estimated 110 million prevalent STIs among women and men in the United States,” said the study. “Of these, more than 20% of infections (22.1 million) were among women and men aged 15 to 24 years. Approximately 19.7 million incident infections occurred in the United States in 2008; nearly 50% (9.8 million) were acquired by young women and men aged 15 to 24 years.”

The study focused on estimating the incidences of sexual transmission of particular diseases as opposed to other forms of transmission. For example, it did not include HIV infections that were not sexually transmitted. It also counted the number of infections rather than the number of people infected--recognizing that a single individual could have multiple infections.

“When calculating the number of prevalent and incident infections, only those infections that were sexually transmitted were counted,” said the CDC fact sheet. “In general, CDC estimated the total number of infections in the calendar year, rather than the number of individuals with infection, since one person can have more than one STI at a given time (e.g., HPV and chlamydia) or more than one episode of a single STI (e.g., repeat chlamydia infection).”

The most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States in 2008 was human papillomavirus (HPV), which caused 14,100,000 estimated infections that year.

After HPV, in order of magnitude, according to the study, new STIs in the U.S. in 2008 included 2,860,000 new Chlamydia infections; 1,090,000 new Trichomoniasis infections; 820,000 new Gonorrhea infections; 776,000 new Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2) infections; 55,400 new syphilis infections; 41,400 new HIV infections; and 19,000 new Hepatitis B infections.

The total of 110,197,000 existing STIs in the United States in 2008 included 79,100,000 HPV infections, 24,100,000 HSV-2 infections; 3,710,000 Trichomoniasis infections; 1,579,000 Chlamydia infections; 908,000 HIV infections; 422,000 Hepatitis B infections; 270,000 Gonorrhea infections; and 117,000 Syphilis infections.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

In 2010 there were 308 million people in the US

http://www.census.gov/prod/cen2010/brie … 0br-03.pdf

243 million were 16 and over

50 million were 62 and over

So that's about 187 million people to share about 140 million cases of STI.

Of course there's doubling or tripling up in there but...those aren't impressive odds

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

A free people should not be forced to subsidize the costs of irresponsible, trashy, idiotic people.

That's what Obamacare forces us all to do: Pay for contraception, pay for maternity care, pay for STD treatment. Even if we don't need it. Even if we do not engage in activities which have the slightest possibilities of resulting in the need for such care. Even if we're willing to pay for such services, should we require them.

It's tyranny and loss of liberty which results in behavior like this. Because most of them are not paying the costs that result from their idiotic and irresponsible activities; those costs are being socialized to us all by force of law. And nobody is dying for lack of such treatment without the ability to have kids (and pass on their trashy culture [or lack thereof] as well as their diseases).

Freedom is the solution to this problem. The government nanny state and tyranny are the cause. In a free society more of these idiots would be broke and/or in more pain and/or dying. And everybody would know how terrible their decisions and lifestyles really are.

HPV is very common, ever had a cold sore? That's HPV and is sexually transmitted usually.

Mace,

Cold sores are caused by HSV-I (Herpes-Simplex I), not HPV. You are right about one thing though, HPV is very common. I have heard estimates that half the US population has been infected at one point. It's consequences are very different from herpes though. Among women, their immune systems will purge it within 2 years, but some of the remaining 10% will develop cancer in the cervix or throat. It is also normally purged by the immune system and can cause cancer in men, but I don't have the stats for that on hand. In addition to cancer, it can cause genital warts in both men and women.

Sadly, condoms provide limited protection from infection and only women can be tested for it, but there is a vaccine available for both men and women.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

I'm starting to suspect that people who make up wildly inaccurate claims about STDs have STDs and are choosing to believe ridiculous nonsense in order to feel better about themselves.

Most people do not get, and have never gotten, "cold sores." If you think they do, that's because somebody comforted you with this lie because you have herpes. Sorry. You made a mistake. Statistically speaking, you probably made a lot of them. You might be promiscuous. You might be trashy. And it's nobody's fault but yours.

Half the population has had HPV? Whoever told you that has it.

CDC says there's 70 million cases of HPV in the US.  So that's not half.  Between 1/4th and 1/5th.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Yes like 80% of all sexually active Americans get it anyway

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Additionally 80-90% get cold sores...

apologies HSV-1 HPV confusion earlier... different strains of herpes.. But still herpes and still 'sexually' transmitted

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Mace,

No no no. The other herpes virus is HSV-2. HPV is not herpes. Entirely different viruses.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Yell,

79 million. And, that statistic is about how many people are infected right now. The stats also say:

Most sexually active men and women will get HPV at some point in their lives.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

~99% of people carry a type of Herpes virus, whether it be simplex I or II, varicella zoster, Epstein-Barr (the viral infection that is commonly associated with Pfeiffer's), Cytomegalo, etc....

Not all of these cases are sexually transmitted, however many are.
Aside from the Herpes viruses there's plenty of chlamydia, candida, gonorhea and genital warts (some caused by HPV) to go around for all of us.

STD's are far more common than you think, perhaps if you'd never had sex or even kissed someone you wouldn't ever get one, otherwise fat chance you will. smile

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Just to clear things up:

- The Herpes virus family consists of 8 different, related virus strands. The nasty part about these Herpes viri is that they build themselves into your genetic code and after initial infection will lay dormant in your cells for years, waiting for a period of time when your immune system is compromised to flair up. They are incurable.

- HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is not a Herpes virus. It is, however, very common, with around 90% of the population being "colonised" by it, almost always asymptomatically.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Mind you, something as simple as a wart may be caused by HPV (one of the most common causes).

It can give throat cancer to anybody who brings their tongue in contact with genital warts.

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

HSV-1 is very common... if you have ever had a cold sore, you have HSV-1.

Never rule out the possibility that you are a complete idiot

Re: If You're Going to America, Party Before You Leave

Plus a lot of these infections are subclinical... You are infected, without symptoms, without you even knowing. The presence of a cold soar may be quite a sensitive test for the presence of hsv 1 or 2, however, the absence of a cold soar does not  rule out hsv (and not only because it can be located in other ganglia on the body and even cause a herpes genitalis, but also because of subclinical infections).

In fact, most people with HSV-2 (genital herpes) are asymptomatic, or have so few symptoms they don't notice. So they could easily infect someone and not know it.
