Re: Training Galaxy

Should IC have a "Virgo"?

I'm not sure why it disappeared. Any solid explanations? Surely there must be..

New players are really thrown in at the deep end, at the moment. A few times now in the last couple rounds I've tripped over people in the fam I wrongfully assumed knew what "fambank" meant, or that attack bonus did not affect bomber:laser conflicts, or what sort of agent/wizzie to NW ratio was reasonable.

With Virgo, if I remember correctly, you would get to 10 planets, and then you were promoted out. It may sound boring to us, but it's fun if it's the first time around you've done it ... with an "all-knowing" veteran watching over you, simply communicating with you in a friendly manner, throwing in some essential personalised tips as you grow, with a family forum of concise but detailed advice to back it.

Maybe it should be brought back with some minor additions to force players to fully utilise and read up on each aspect of the game, e.g.:
- You need to take a planet off a fellow competitor
- You need to successfully cast an offensive opp/spell

I doubt a Virgo at the moment would require more than a few keen tutors..?

Discuss.

Re: Training Galaxy

I was a tutor long long long ago XD

I agree with this motion, get some sort of starter galaxy so new guests have some sort of idea of whats going on, also helps the burden of future family members from explaining literally everything. Thus they can just recap what they've already learned in virgo and the guest can carry on with an idea of what to do smile

Friend is a four letter word.

Re: Training Galaxy

Yeah I think a big problem these days is new players join fams, they dont know what to do and no one in there fam is willing to teach them they way they need to be taught. They end up getting frustrated and go inactive or delete, never to return. I would be in favor of another training galaxy. We have plenty of capable tutors around smile

<@SerialBusiness> good to know. I will make a note of this

Re: Training Galaxy

Stefan has recently added a tutorial to the game which new players get when joining a galaxy for the 1st time, this gives them a pop up each time the click a link on the side bar explains what each does and what to do etc, I had a quick test of it a while ago and seems pretty good and helpful.

On another note another idea going around is to restrict new player to a certain galaxy for there 1st round, for example new players would only be able to join pw and not me or h/c galaxies.

Re: Training Galaxy

Virgo was removed because it became nothing but a graveyard of potential new players.  I tutored for a year or so, and found that very few players had any interest whatsoever in taking part in a week long tutorial just so they could start playing.  The galaxy devolved into a place where tutors would compete to see who could have the best eco with 9 planets, and most of the guides that were used were 2-3 page long explanations of how to play, that no one in this "I want it NOW" society had any interest in.  People would join IC, realize they had to work before they could actually play, and leave.

I would love to see some kind of tutorial instituted, but I don't think a full fledged Virgo would help.  In a dying game, last thing we should be looking to do is re-instituting something that drove countless new players away.

Re: Training Galaxy

@Undeath: There's the explanation I was looking for!

@Insane: Excellent, so there is something to help new people. And yes, a PW restriction does sound logical.
