Re: sociology

so im studying sociology. and we had a task to do. and i failed because i just argued with the rest of my group. (lucky it wasnt't graded)

each group was given a different scenario, but anyway i'll give you guys a quick description of what i had too do and see if u guys came up with the same solution as me smile.

ok so your a group of 19th centuary missionaries who have been sent to an uncharted region of africa to educate the locals in the christian religion. your boat has just left so theirs no way of leaving. you have 4-5 weeks worth of food at your disposal. (this was all the information we were given)

so. how do you go about doing this? (remembering surival is your first priority)

answer wise i need;
1- things that need to be done immediatly
2- things that need to be done but can wait a little longer
3- how to actually complete the task
4- any difficulties that can be overcome and how
5- any difficulties that cannot be overcome

thanks for helping if you do smile. but like i said ive already done this so im not cheating by asking tongue

Re: sociology

Knowing what missionaries did in the past, key is to start by handing out something to get the favor of the vilagers and their attention. This could either be jewelry (glass beads!), food or some extra workforce (help them build some buildings).

Once you have their attention you can start fooling them with false promises of wealth and happiness, in this life or one after. Mid to middle-long term strategy should be to settle somewhere permanently, to create a headquarters, a "church".

Then when you have their faith, you start sucking them dry. Steal everything they have, leave nothing, return home after a few years when the first African priests have been fully educated to fulfill your roles and take all the money.

Re: sociology

1- things that need to be done immediatly  --> a boat, in case you need to flee in panic

2- things that need to be done but can wait a little longer --> sex, christians have always this in the head, but 1st they have to meet the villagers and convert their teenagers so they can abuse them later.

3- how to actually complete the task --> you need an army, to pillage and rape all the way down, so the new borns will be christians.  Spanish did it in south america and look at them now, they're more christians than an 'Opus Dei' bishop.

4- any difficulties that can be overcome and how --> their native language may be an issue, so you'll have to cut their tongues if they dont learn to speak like you (using the bible as the didactic book)

5- any difficulties that cannot be overcome --> the mosquitos!  damn evil creatures!

I believe Render and I are semi-serious, after all we are using history as our guideline.

History shows Christian missionaries were in general not civilised.

Re: sociology

yup i know, i got shouted at when i mentioned muskets and such lol.
i realised it would be hard and couldnt convince anybody that a little show of power would help so i suggested atleast just monitoring the locals for a bit. no such luck. i explained we'd prolly get killed quite quickly if we just went over and spoke to them. i also explained that 4-5 weeks worth of food REALLY wasnt a lot. and i ended up getting really annoyed cuz i knew we woulnt complete the task ecause my group just couldnt grasp the sitiation that we were actially in. so i decided to stay on the beach. build a small church and and set up fishing nets unt i finally dies of disintry rofl. but atleast i survived longer than everyone else tongue

Re: sociology

Hahaha sounds like your classmates are a bunch of naive fools with a romanticised view of (19th century) uncharted African areas. Muskets would have been a good idea, as would shiny metal iron be! Make them believe you are gods with silver skin that shoot fire from their wooden beams!

Re: sociology

In many cases a Priest would befriend an elder, or important person.

He would show cooking methods, metalurgy, medicine, writing, digging a well, water purification, and other important things.

The value of such things would be apparent easily, and the priest would improve the lives of those he was working with.

Usually the priest, being taught multiple languages already, would learn the language of those around him. He would then make a book anoting the language as he had learned it.

The Priest(s) would often make others better off by far before making their own structure(s). Many of the places these Priests helped in the America's flourished and became cities and towns. Tribes in Africa who were protected by a Priest suffered less the ravages of slavery (slavers avoided organized area's) and were far less likely to perish entirely. Many area's in Africa, where cities bloomed, owe their growth to Christian or Islamic missionaries (or armies, yes).

A priest was also typically unarmed and therefore unable to defend themselves. However some national groups spreading religion (Conquistidors for instance) were quite well armed and caused great harm.

History shows a great many of these Priests lived and helped their followers gain wealth in the form of better infrastructure (buildings, wells, sewers even), property (paintings, books, better clothes) and also helped dramatically increase survivability.

I am sorry I did not see this thread before your report was written.

Re: sociology

Alundra how do you think Hernan Cortes did=?

To turn them into belief, first they have to see you like a god, making their pagan sacrifices look childish compared to yours tongue

Don't know eksactly where you're studyign, but if your classmates think religion did anything good to the world kick their asses until they're closed in a monastery.
Religion = Blood and mass assasinations, and catholics have the 1st prize on that task.

History does not lie, and human being is constantly repeating it and not learning from past massacres.  Look at us now, we're heading 2014 very similar to our grand-grandpas were heading 1914 where 1st WW started.  We're the damned to repeat our history in a foolish loop.

Well, I'd rather agree with some of the above descriptions of Europeans "educating" natives in Africa or America... usually the church came together with the military.

But let's take your unrealistic conditions of missionaries on their own... that was the situation in Scandinavia around 800 AC. Monks and missionaries were sent to Scandinavia either because they were a bit crazy or as a punishment, most of them became "happy martyrs" and those who survived did so because they had medicial skills and thus were seen as helpful (until there was an illness they couldn't cope with and got killed).

So, I'd say, best chance for survival: bring some herbs and medical skills, make yourself useful and there might be a chance of not only survival but even getting fed. An ill person is also a good and helpless victim to preach to.
