Re: Fat People live longer

The link provided did not work for me, can I get the name of the study?

I should note I saw an article talking about a study in which obese was found to be at high risk, but slightly over-weight was not, which sugests more that "BMI" is either incorrect, or the normal "zero point" is wrong... Thus fat people are still have increased health risk, as they always have had and always will have....

Re: Fat People live longer

If the "normal" point is incorrect, then BEING 200 LBS OVERWEIGHT MUST BE GOOD!

Re: Fat People live longer

Uhm, the original article provided evidence to support a hypothesis that people with slightly higher BMI's than is deemed as acceptable, i.e. slightly overweight people, lived slightly longer lives. It never said that "fat" people lived longer, as the study did not focus on fat percentages in bodies. As you happily pointed out yourself, Flint, muscle weight can easily cause someone to be "overweight", especially as muscle tissue is denser than fat tissue (heck, fat is like the least dense material in our body, other than air) .

People with BMI ranges so high that they are considered "obese" still have lower life spans though, even lower than people with "good" BMI, according to research.

Re: Fat People live longer

I'll try to dig up the original article through pubmed when I'm at my uni again, what Einstein linked to was just an article written on Men's Health that referenced the original article. And we all know what the media is like when it comes to Science...

Re: Fat People live longer

And aside from that, there still remains the question of quality of living. Even if people with slightly higher BMI's life longer, is their quality of living better as well or do they spend those extra years and the years before in poorer conditions with lower quality of living? I don't care about living longer if it means I have to sacrifice the quality.

Now that is something that would be interesting to me.

Re: Fat People live longer

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published the story. 2.88 million people were examined and causation was not sought out.

Re: Fat People live longer

But was it as stated, and the article i found? Where a slight increase in BMI showed an increase in length of life but "obese" was still bad... i.e. the BMI settings of 18.5-25 = "normal" and 25-30 = "overweight" might be slightly off, or the fact that BMI is inaccurate has played a part. The article I read was quite explicit that the study did not show that being "obese" and unfit was still bad for you and the length and quality of life deteriorated quite rapidly...

Re: Fat People live longer

In related news, new study suggests that people who breath live longer than those who do not. Facts to follow.

Arby: A very strict mod, reminds me of a fat redneck who drives a truck around all day with a beer in one hand. I hated this guy at the start, however, I played a round in PW with him where he went as an anonymous player. Our fam got smashed up and everyone pretty much left. Arby stayed around and helped out the remaining family. At the end of the round he revealed himself.... My views on him have changed since. Your a good guy.....

Sorry, I don't see many elderly folks over 200 pounds.

Re: Fat People live longer

We've already firmly established that Einstein's thread title is entirely factually incorrect.
