Well, you need a 20% att bonus for soldiers to get even with droids. That costs 20pts.
For the same 20pts you get droids plus the better def of droids for free.
So att bonus shouldn't be the reason why not having taken droids (and if it was... ahem, the thinking behind was flawed, I think).
About research:
As usual I have my doubts about how useful research is in a game which is
* short (as it looks max 36 days)
* without a market and thus with no specialization
* much space (I guess overbuilding isn't beyond 100%? and if then only on selected big planets with portals? and those players with higher OB will be soon food for the daily automatic delete?)
* and victory conditions based on size
Common strat sense tells me that the value of research can be only much lower than in other games. So low that I was playing around with the idea of not using research at all in Orion (yes, I was tempted and had already designed a race for Orion before I found the strength to resist *grin).
But there are so many variables that I find it very difficult to not only make an educated strat guess but to find actual proof in form of a calculation.
Easier it would be to have some empirical data from the present game where one could see how much investment a player, let's say a quantam, needed to gain what research values and what advantages this gives and to compare it with what could had been directly built with the investment: mines, CFs, units etc.
