I think having a very simple fam chat window imbedded into the game, say to the right of the fam pic on the family page, would help improve activity significantly and would likely go some way to bringing more people to the game. I used to use irc, but I can never be arsed anymore .. only the die-hards from back in the day still use it.
We do have a fam chat? ...Yes, it's a crappy lil Java Applet, but we do have one.
Or did you mean one that automatically connects you or something? ...maybe a chat similar to facebook chat, with a lil window or something?
Pie is looking into upgrading this little java applet atm, anyway, I believe.
It is a crappy little java app, but it does the job fine in itself. The issue is that it requires an additional window to be opened, so you need play from two windows at once, it requires you to remember to get on there.
But yes, a facebook-esque chat window imbedded would be great. Just something simple that works inside the game.

Even a simple 'shout cast' type thing on Family screen would be cool.

This is a fantastic idea. I'll look into what is possible, I know mibbit is a great web client but as you say using it still requires another window.
Having everything integrated, and possibly hide-able if you want, would definitely be a huge step forward for communication.
