Japan has also banned guns, quite successfully.  I'm not saying that doing so is the right move for the US but just that because Germany/Cambodia/etc have done so for certain reasons and with certain results doesn't mean that we can draw direct parallels that easily.  It's too complex of a situation with too many variables to just say "Oh this country did it, and look what happened."

Using other countries' failures as an example without examining context is just faulty.  Using other countries' success (like Japan) as an example also doesn't mean that it proves we should do it and can expect the same results, but rather it is proving the possibility to effectively reduce crime with certain measures of control.  Yes it is possible it will also fail, but that doesn't mean that we should shut out the idea.  What a defeatist attitude.

It's also not as if we're saying "take away the guns!".  I think it's more a matter of evaluating current laws and seeing what can be improved.  That's a good thing.  I think people are foregoing logic because they're so afraid of losing the ability to own a gun.  Well guess what, not everybody should be allowed to.  And the ones who would not allowed to?  You can bet they will argue otherwise.

Speaking of being afraid, this is the kind of thing that scares me personally:

Wow.  So death to all who disagree?  I would say this kind of attitude is pretty good proof that again, some people should not be allowed to own firearms.

You're missing my point.  Nobody is saying "take them all away!".  The idea is to take a look at our current gun control laws and see what needs improvement.  You're reacting as if a proposed unconditional ban for 100% of civilians is going into legislation.  That isn't happening.

And again a "failed ideology" isn't accurate.  Japan has proved this.  It doesn't mean we should emulate their approach but it does mean that more control isn't inherently flawed or a failure.  It depends on the context and details.  Things aren't so black and white.

By the way, do you see the irony of saying things like "kill everyone who wants guns banned" so that you can protect yourself against a dictatorial state?

I am saying there is some lines to not cross.

Banning religion, banning guns, banning free speech, banning certain other things most valued and cherished... outright... should be something people are willing to kill and die for.

And Pie... a lot of people are talking full bans in this forum. So I need to show what the price of such idiocy is. If someone wishes to note he got refused for a rifle... hey cool. If they wish to note that he stole the guns from his mom (and killed her) awesome. If they wish to offer reasonable ideas... fine.

I think it is a reasonable idea to allow (at minimum) teachers with Concealed Carry Weapons Permits to carry guns in school. I also think we should try to get a certain percentage per school. I think this would make schools to scary for people to do heinous crimes against.

To that extent I backed up my idea's with real life examples where it worked, here in the States no less, and am willing to argue those points. Most here are unwilling to argue but want a blanket ban.
