Survey suggests scientific sins are common
9 percent of scientists in sample report seeing instances of misconduct

WASHINGTON - Research misconduct at U.S. institutions may be more common than previously suspected, with 9 percent of scientists saying in a new survey that they personally had seen fabrication, falsification or plagiarism.

The survey of 2,212 mainly biomedical scientists at 605 universities and other research institutions, published in the journal Nature on Wednesday, also showed that researchers are very reluctant to report bad conduct.

Thirty-seven percent of cases of suspected misconduct were never reported to the institution involved for investigation, perhaps due to fear of reprisals for turning in a colleague or a desire to protect the flow of research money.

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

Well the nice thing about science is that if you set up the same experiment, you should get the same results. Do 50 or so experiments, and you will be able to identify a bad apple. And science places a high value for reproducibility of test results, and the tests results are questionable until they are consistently reproduced.

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

Not all science works that way.. take global warming... it is not scientifically reproducable, yet the claims on it lasted for quite a while.

Then it's not science, but soft science.

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

Its been a well known fact for decades that most scientific research that denies or attempts to disprove man-made climate change, has been conducted by scientists in the pay of oil/big industry.

Clearly their reseach cannot be trusted.

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

I wanted to say something first. There are arguments that the principle of falsifiability does not always apply to science. That is true. However, just because some science does not operate that way does not mean it is not bad science. It may be science that is poorly put together, which it would have to be, and we should have a low confidence in it. It should be seen as material to work with for the future.

Selur,

Just to clear up a possible misconception. I hope you mean that they aren't false findings, but just not credible because of the biased motivation. However, I should point out that such can be said for research that confirms environmentalist arguments as well.

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

The global warming science you speak of is "theory".

What this survey is about is experiments - testing theories.

The misconduct this survey shows reflects scientists with poor techniques.  They set up their experiments to work for a specific result.  In science that's not how things work; you hypothesize what will happen then you see what really does happen and find out why.

This story is too basic on saying what these regulations are that were broken.  It could just be minor things such as not writing down improper procedures (I point you in the direction of lab techniques used vs Tour de France riders).

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

so 9% of scientific research is inproperly reported and might be wrong... wow, who would of thought it?

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

there is only so much money to go around, so naturally there will be people embelleshing their reports in order to get more grants; this is "normal" economic behaviour; that is why peer review and stuff is so important, you may fool some people some of the time, but you'll get caught eventually

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

More news: In a survey of 2,212 mainly biomedical scientists at 605 universities and other research institutions 91% of the respondants said they had neither observed nor had direct evidence of researchers in their own departments committing suspected research misconduct over the past three academic years. They described only 265 incidents of bad conduct. After evaluation it is was found that some did not meet the threshold of the federal definition of misconduct, leaving only 201 cases of misconduct stated by 164 scientists, or 7.4 percent of the respondents.

Re: Scientists fake results frequently

7.4% is hardly frequently.

Besides which there were 2212 biomedical scientists, 605 universities/institutions. Now let's assume there were an average of 15 people in each department (likely a low number when taking into account student researchers and such). That makes 9075 scientists/researchers. Of which there were 201 cases of misconduct. That means 2.2% of the 9075 scientists did something naughty. In all likelihood, the percentage is even lower given the low department number estimate. After all, there could easily be 100s of scientists/researchers at a single university over a three year period.
