Re: The Election Recounts

On YOUR smart phone. My Android 4 shows it all pretty! big_smile

Bacchus, entitlements already include it. Justinian is demanding employers offer it directly. Which makes no sense. Because employers who pay enough that their employees can't get state assistance, and who offer health insurance (the ones he's talking about), already pay far more than enough for their employees to easily afford birth control.

Re: The Election Recounts

Kemp,

1. Birth Control

So your argument seems to be that:

1. If S needs X to survive and can not afford it, then you may agree that a conscientious objection is cancelled out because S's rights are more important.
2. The pill is affordable for someone who is employed, or covered by those on welfare.
____
Therefore, there is no necessary reason to force the employer to cover S's expense.

If that is your argument, then my counter argument is that we are then forced to potentially burden a woman with an annual $600 for what could have been $120.00 (assuming the insurance dropped the price down to $10.00 from $50.00), and she forfeits an annual $480.00 to her medication deductible. I'm saying that's unfair, and I don't see how the employer's right to a conscience is more important.

But you are right, I do not hold a person's conscience against abortion in high regard. I'm only willing to grant the employer their exemption as a conscientious objector when the birth control is used as a contraceptive without another valid medical reason.

Moreover, I believe that the freedom of religion should be radically reinterpreted. It should mean that while people are free to practice their religion privately within reason, the public is also free from their religion. There ought to be an iron wall between religion and state/secular institutions. Which is why I am okay with people going to church and living as conservatively as they want (unless it involves abuse etc), but I am impatient with political social conservatism, conscientious objectors, bibles in courts, and faith-based initiatives.

2. BeoWolfe and Women

Again, I did not say anything about saving poor women. Unless, of course, saving them means ending abstinence-only education for good. All I meant was that we should not judge poor women's irresponsible sexual choices so harshly. We should show them some empathy for their circumstances, which are often partly the government's fault. Even Milton Friedman showed empathy for poor people, because he understood the perverse incentives the government imposed on them due to the misguided intentions of dogooder politicians.

3. Obamacare

Finally, I think Obamacare should be completely overturned. I was on the fence until recently, but my escort told me all about Obamacare, including the reasons why specific companies are considering whether to cut their number of employees or cut the hours of some employees to below full time. What she told me about Obamacare opened my eyes to the monstrosity it is.

Without personal conscience why should anybody obey such laws? You can't possibly prosecute everybody.  Not even most.

Meaning what, we pull out a Bible and start praying and you'll drag us off like the KGB?  Again, how will you enforce such a thing? What makes you think you can?

Yell,

Ever read St. Augustine? If you do, you will realize he implies an important point about politics. The basis of the state is not religion, or democracy as it is today. It is iron and blood. Religion and democracy merely obscure that fact.

Re: The Election Recounts

So get bloody.  I go back to a point I made earlier: modern day progressives are pussycats compared to the guys who won Stalingrad.
If the Red Army wasn't up to it, neither are Democrats.

Re: The Election Recounts

Justinian I,

"1. If S needs X to survive and can not afford it, then you may agree that a conscientious objection is cancelled out because S's rights are more important."

S is a null set, so what are you talking about? The state already provides contraception via healthcare assistance to the poor. Every single woman with an income disqualifying her for state assistance can afford birth control. It's that cheap.

You're just trying to parse my arguments because you refuse to respond to my simple, inescapable points. Nobody is being denied birth control. Nobody is dying for lack of it. The state provides it. It's cheap. Nobody with a job providing health insurance which doesn't cover it can't afford it. Nobody. I've pointed this out repeatedly but you're just ignoring it because, for whatever reason, you're fixated on birth control as a human "right." In any event, nobody knows who you're talking about. There's literally nobody in your S group.

I'm glad the Constitution of the United States gives us rights (not that many are still protected), because many share your view that people are slaves to the state.

"Moreover, I believe that the freedom of religion should be radically reinterpreted. It should mean that while people are free to practice their religion privately within reason, the public is also free from their religion."

I agree. Nobody is forcing anyone to work for someone who objects to paying to kill their babies. So it's already interpreted in that way today. And nobody is forcing anybody to pay to kill others' babies. So it's already interpreted that way today. Though, government does use my tax money to kill human beings. So you're objecting to government providing contraception except, perhaps, in the case of medical conditions (not counting pregnancy)?

"Again, I did not say anything about saving poor women. Unless, of course, saving them means ending abstinence-only education for good. "

How about, the government isn't responsible for teaching my children, or anyone else's, about the birds and the bees? The government cannot solve trashy culture. The government cannot save everyone's children from crappy parents. Any ignorance is not a result of abstinence-only education. I find your attempts to substitute government for your mother disturbing.

MTV is so disgusting. WTB better parents so they go out of business.

Planned Parenthood is good at helping minors hide their destructive and unhealthy (both physically and pscyhologically) behavior from their parents, who are still legally responsible for their well-being. Yay for hurting kids?!

Because if your 16 year old daughter gets a disease and pregnant, clearly what she needs most is an abortion and some medication. All better!

Re: The Election Recounts

LMAO!! This thread's main topic (basicly women) its just absurd. Its ridicolous that a bunch of men (thats you guys) are discussing what women should or should not to do with their bodys.

This is one of the fundamental problems with Republicans....they claim to want smaller government yet they want a bible in our damn bedrooms. let women do what they are going to do. Its nobody's business but their own. All the social issues that Republicans concern themselves with are, when reduced to their simplest terms, IS NONE OF THEIR FRICKIN BUSINESS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!

Wether or not a black woman in Harlem gets pregnant is no concern to some rich white guy in Vermont. 2 gay guys getting married in California has ABSOLUTELY no bearing or effect on some rich white guy's life. I hope and pray that the Republican party all but disappears. Their stances on economy, foriegn policy and the like.....i can kinda agree with at times. The republican party's stances on social issues.....pretty much as evil as evil gets. This is why i cant ever vote republican again.

Any person or party who thinks they have the right to dictate to other people how they should live, based on a 2000 year old book, needs to be removed from our society. Its almost 2013 guys. The era of the republican party needs to come to an end.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee!!

BUT it's my business if blacks in harlem can't get mortgages, gays in Vermont get fired for putting their wedding photo on their desk?  THEN I gotta march on Washington to give orders to every business in America with another Civil Rights Act?  MYOB = MYOB = MYODB

or is my political conscience something for the Democrats to flick like a lightswitch?  Abortion OFF, Gay marriage ON

Re: The Election Recounts

AdriusAvangion,

Ironic signature, for someone condoning using violence to end human life when it's convenient [in order to avoid the consequences of one's own actions]. Not only this, but you try to focus the issue on propaganda, as if men can't legitimately have a position on the topic when the violence is being performed on babies inside women's bodies. Clearly men cannot have opinions on this violence, due to its location! Infallible logic.

I'm with you on the gay marriage thing. We need to sue god for being an ignorant boob who won't let gays create children. WHAT A HATER.

[I wish I could obey forum rules]

Re: The Election Recounts

Adrius.... tsk, tsk, tsk  What has gotten in to you?  I don't recall saying a what a woman could or could not do with her body - its YOUR types of people demanding that I get involved.   I have to pay for other peoples abortions and health care and now birth control.... really?

"Any person or party who thinks they have the right to dictate to other people how they should live, based on a 2000 year old book, needs to be removed from our society. Its almost 2013 guys."

Wow.... coming from a guy who backs the party who thinks that the government shouldn't allow me to buy a 44oz soft drink... the same party that tells me I MUST buy health care or be punished...

I will gladly take the wisdom I can find in a 2000 year old book that tells me I can over come anything though God over the ramblings of a President who tells me I can't survive unless the government is there to control me, tell me what to eat, tell me when I can see a doctor, tell me how much money I can make...  you obviously believe the opposite - I believe its those types of people who need to be removed from society.

Re: The Election Recounts

I never read the american constitution, but is religion mentioned in it at all?

Re: The Election Recounts

Yes.
Beginning of 1st Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;

Additionally:
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.
