Hmm. Not sure if this is okay as far as forum rules are concerned.
Anyway, this is definitely a WTF: http://i.imgur.com/3Qnnz.gif (NSFW)
See, now, maybe that pedestrian would have lived if there hadn't been any cross walk signal, because he would have had to look out more carefully before crossing the street.
I've visited places where they don't have crosswalks, where virtually everyone jaywalks, where there are no traffic lights or stop signs or any traffic controls at any intersection, where even though there are traffic controls neither drivers nor pedestrians pay them any mind.
In such places, accidents like that would never happen.
1. The congestion is such that traffic at pretty much any time of day or night moves no faster than 20 to 30 kmph.
2. There are multiple lanes, with pedestrians (and vendors) mingling with the slow-moving traffic, and so everyone is aware, expecting, and predicting both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
3. Accidents that might occur are usually very minor, and injuries slight, due to the slow-moving traffic.
4. In such places you tend to have more efficient usage of roads. That is to say, because of the congestion, people change their work and living behavior so they drive at different times of day or night when it is less congested it is cheaper, requiring fewer new road construction. Due to congestion, people demand better and more mass-transportation. Industrial traffic, such as dumptrucks, transport trucks, delivery trucks, etc., tend to run at night hours, for it is the only time of day when they can actually efficiently conduct their affairs. Businesses then stay open longer hours because of more street traffic at later hours, which creates more jobs and is better for the economy.
In this respect, then, traffic controls implemented by so called "developed" world may actually cause more traffic accident related deaths per capita and thus make it worse off for the individual, and, also, due to control systems being obviously more expensive, inefficient, and thus also more detrimental to the economy of a whole, systems of control detrimentally effect the majority as well. It is an example of a system of control which is only supportive of the best interest of the rich elitist: he likes his fast bikes, cars, etc., and like driving fast, like having cheap speeding fines: I mean to someone earning millions a year, the cost of a speeding ticket is negligible, and not a deterrent.
Ultimately to blame is the hypocrisy of the judicial systems of the developed world, which have resulted in inherently dysfunctional systems of control, not just traffic, but pretty much every aspect of so called 'developed' society.
pedestrians deserve to be run over! get a car, jerk!
