Re: Trolling

There seems to be some confusion over what trolling is exactly.  Could mods provide a definition with examples, perhaps?

I think it is important that everyone is clear on what trolling is exactly.  For one, the reason some people get accused of trolling is because they don't know they are trolling because they don't know what trolling is, which, in such a case, would make the one accusing the person of trolling the one doing the trolling, wouldn't it?  I mean it's not like a person can be guilty of committing trolling if they didn't know what trolling was and so only person making the accusation knows what trolling is and is thus the more likely culprit of trolling, no?  I mean, how could it be possible for someone to commit trolling if they don't know exactly what trolling is?  Doesn't part of the definition of trolling involve intending to derail a topic?  And so when someone accuses the person who is trolling but doesn't know it isn't the topic automatically derailed by the accusation?

Anyway, it seems unfair that they might get a ban a newb for trolling just because some nasty veteran forum poster who knows what trolling is accuses them of trolling when they don't even know what trolling is or didn't even intent to troll.

So, it just seems like a good idea for everyone if some clear definition of trolling is provided by the mods so everybody is clear on what trolling is so if someone accuses someone of trolling they themselves don't get accused of trolling by the person they are accused of trolling and thus avoid a huge troll fest, you see?

And, Render, I personally take offense to you trolling me by accusing me of trolling mods.  tongue I would never think of doing such a thing!  Grr! X(

Maybe trolling and spamming definition can be mentioned in the official IC FAQ?  First, can someone just explain what trolling is exactly?

Re: Trolling

Thanks Wendy.  That was very helpful for people reading this thread, but what about the community?  Like if there is going to be a rule against trolling, it should be explained maybe in the official rulebook.  Or is trolling to be considered condoned and permitted on this forum?

Re: Trolling

The community may read this thread also & the majority understand what trolling is or can find out what one is just by doing a simple search (as I did for the definition for this thread, there are many more examples out there if you look!) so not really neccessary to have yet another explanation elsewhere I feel.
Also the forum rules pretty much cover anything Troll related in their current form. If you don't understand the rules then maybe use a dictionary if english is not your first language?

Re: Trolling

"Signs that your trolling is unsuccesful:
*Your victim identifying you as a troll."

For you to be so obsessed with this topic and have whined about it for months, it sounds like you've been counter-trolled. Nobody believes you couldn't find a definition of "trolling" on the web, so there's no really need to define counter-trolling either.

Also note that "trolling" is commonly used to refer to idiots looking for attention, beyond attempts at inflicting emotional distress. While "good" trolling (that is, trolling by non-morons) generally aims for emotional reactions in order to achieve the most entertaining responses, there are legions of idiots who will spam anything that they obviously do not sincerely believe just to get any attention at all. While these methods do not include the trademark aim of inducing emotional distress, both are people spamming because they hate themselves and want attention. "Troll" is, in common use, used to describe both.

[I wish I could obey forum rules]

So, Wendy, are people who commit trolling going to be punished by mods or threatened with bans and such or aren't they?

Re: Trolling

From what I have seen the mods do punish people for Trolling already. If you break the forum rules you will be warned & if you carry on you will be punished, simple.

Okay, so if the mods punish people for trolling already, shouldn't there be at least some mention of it in the rules?  I read through the rules and there is no rule against trolling.

And so here I am, getting accused of trolling everyone, fearing some arbitrary judgment and punishment by the mods, for some violation of the rules which isn't in the rulebook?  I mean, WTF?

How should we handle trolling to the faq and official rules?  Maybe I should I start a thread in ideas about this?  Or would that be considered spamming?  Maybe I'll get banned for that?

Re: Trolling

I was referring to how it isn't mentioned in the rulebook thread.  Thanks for pointing to where it is mentioned on the forum rules page.  I had no idea it was mentioned there.  Maybe it can be defined better, though?  Because I think it is still unclear what trolling is.

Both?   I mean, I am getting a better idea what trolling could refer to thanks to Wendy's link to that urbandictionary site.

But I'm still not entirely clear on it.  And if trolling is technically against this forum's rules and isn't to be tolerated as much as it might on other forums, the least mods could do is at least explain what trolling his according to their own definitions so as to make it clear to people HERE what it is so they don't get arbitrarily punished for something they didn't know they were doing.

I mean, heck, I'm getting accused of trolling by starting this very thread.  Maybe I'll get banned?  Should I be afraid?  Will my freedom of speech on this forum get violated because I get accused of trolling by asking what the definition of trolling is? I didn't know or didn't mean to troll anyone!  I just wanted MODs' definition of what trolling meant to THEM, and for this I get accused of trolling them? BAh!

I guess now that I am coming to a clearer understanding of what trolling is according to Wendy, thanks to her definition posted from that urban dictionary website, I suppose I can see how some might view this thread is simply an example of trolling / counter-trolling...

Should I take that definition Wendy kindly provided from that urbandictionary website as the definition of trolling that is accepted by mods here?

Re: Trolling

The mods do not decide what trolling is; trolling is trolling. So no need to redefine what already is. I am not sure what you are looking for, some black and white definition on which the mods can uphold the trolling rules? All forum rules are upheld by subjective decisions, whether it is trolling, spamming or any other rule.

Re: Trolling

Trolling is trolling & I doubt there's variation in the definition, so I don't see why a Mod would need to tell you the same thing as anyone else.
Unless you want them to word it differently, but even then it would still be saying the same as what you have already been told.
It's becoming a bit of a circular conversation.
