The toxin destroys red blood cells, which effectively creates a pseudo high.  It also deterious to the neurological portions of the body.  People think they get visions.  Actually it's a loss of chemical neuro firings to the brain, along with the inability of red blood cells to carry oxygen to the brain.

Seriously venom isn't as fun as most people make it out to be.  It's rather dangerous, and people do it, almost to the day they die.
