you know what stops political candidates from doing it the 19th century way - having clubs in every town in America who want to hear what a great job X will do, and X has got to beat Y, and they gotta tell friends and family to get behind X?

Nothing.

Except, they're such freaking whores that no person of integrity can feel good selling X to his family and friends.  X won't do a damn thing, and that's not X's fault, and anybody who can't grow up and move beyond that, can step back from the microphone and shut the hell up.

In an era where nobody vouches for candidates, yeah, mass marketing has greater sway.  And that means money counts more, since the only way to get a thousand advocates across America for your election, is to hire them.

Machiavelli's actual and most researched opinions are in "The Discourses on Livy." He explicitly makes statements like republics are more likely to serve the benefit the people than are princes, and summed up with others it's clear he supported republics.

So no. You're confused about what Machiavelli believed.

There are many Tea Party groups. The Koch brothers have nothing to do with many of them.

Elites love OWS. They'd love nothing more than to control everyone's income. The notion that "the 1%" are afraid of "the 99%" is laughably idiotic and ignorant. "The 99%" are pawns of our elite seeking more power.

What is OWS asking for? More government:

Student loans (most would love all education, even graduate, to be paid for and handled by government).

Government-controlled wages. Because those pesky elites can't be allowed to make whatever they can make, and Joe deserves more for cooking fries because that's all he's capable of doing!

More government control of banks. Because government can be trusted to do it fairest and not mess up!

These are all powers our socialist/communist/progressive elite would LOVE to reside in federal government. These are what OWS stand for. The notion that the elite do not approve of OWS is disturbingly ignorant.
