ever been on a real forum?
Wow interesting. This is what I see:

Rchie, what operating system and browser are you using?
I thought it was well known that the code only appears for mods/fmods etc?
This is what it looks like: http://i.imgur.com/RZiuO.png
And for the record: W7 and latest FF.

Vista and Chrome ![]()
Ah... i see what the issue is now.
I was under the misunderstanding that any players could use the quote tag but only mods could use stuff like img and url linking.
It looks like not only can players not do any of that, but they can't even see the affects of people who ARE allowed to do that.
That's pretty silly, I don't know why it is designed that way. The way it should work (in my opinion) is that everybody should be able to use the quote tags, and if/when moderators want to link urls or images, EVERYBODY can see the affects, even if they can't do it themselves.
forum been hacked once, thats why they removed all these functions.
same as making threads sticky, its been quite some years now allready.
stil waiting for a forum what actually works as one!
Well, it's not so much that features were removed, it's just that the new forum is an entirely separate software package. So many of the features we used to have just simply aren't there.
What I don't understand is why the quoting thing specifically is designed to work as it currently does. It just doesn't make sense to me. I'll see if I can figure something better out.
The reason Stefan disabled it, if memory serves, is that in the old forums the linking thing was exploited as a way to hack the forums (or some such nonsense, I could be well off the mark.). To remove that risk in the new forums he removed the ability for anyone except mods/fmods (and clearly devs) to use or see HTML coding. In any case, good luck pie, and god speed! This forum does already have the ability, if the user groups are allowed to use/see HTML ![]()
That sounds right. Allowing users to enter anything other than plaintext is inherently risky. Still though, it's weird to allow mods the ability to use quote tags when nobody else can see the affect of them.
I think this is a shortcoming of punbb, not anything Stefan has done. It's possible too that it's just a configuration thing, I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.
There is a lot of forum sites where you are allowed BBCode and it is stable. You just limit what can be used explicitely
I'm fairly sure it is just a configuration thing, I was discussing this with someone early on in the piece (I think maybe Smartys) who explained the reasoning behind it.
I think the problem is in this:
BBCode: off [img] tag: off Smilies: on
Aside from these options being turned off, for players the quoting option is also turned off. Wouldn't it be an easy fix to just turn this on? ![]()
EDIT: also turn on the [img] tag for everyone! ![]()
Are you allowed to have a banlist of words? If that is the case, that you might be able to allow html and prevent things like iFrames or other things as well. Though yeah, BBCode would be nice to have back again =P.

Of course, it isn't anything Stefan has done! Stefan, Emperor of the Universe, is infallible!

I think our crowd would abuse it. We aren't your run of the mill forum crowd here, Einstein...
