The Olympics, especially the Olympics, - I think - are (or ought to) be about the athletes and their heroic efforts, not nationalism.
I don't cheer for an athlete cause they're from my country, I reserve my cheering for the ones pulling off something extraordinary. So I think the nationalist dimention seems odd to me. It's probably because I live in a region that's part of a country that's part of a union and all of them are struggling to find a clear identity..
I'd make a sole occasion if Tom Steels was still cycling though, he's from my hometown and if he'd have won an Olympic medal, it would have meant free beer..
Whow... You sound like a Eurocrat's wetdream. If only everyone had such a weak sense of national identity. ![]()
compared to americans, everyone has a "weak sense of national identity"
"Whow... You sound like a Eurocrat's wetdream. If only everyone had such a weak sense of national identity."
Nationalism is just a victorious artificial image of an identity. Historicly, they're all false. But yes, I'm in favour of more Europe, if constructed fairly and intelligently. Not a popular thing to say in these days of economic and monetary problems. but it's exactly those silly, outdated notion we call nationalism that got (and keeps) us in this mess in the first place.
Don't get me wrong though, I do cheer for my country's team in the World cup, when it's really a nation against another nation. But the Olympics aren't about that. Also, I don't get sad when my country's team loses. I enjoy the beauty of another's victory equally as much.
BTW: Belgium will obliterate The Netherlands on the 15th.

What's gonna happen the 15th? ![]()
*Edit: just googled it. You're joking, right? ![]()
Our team's fit, full of comradery, eager and ready to prove itself. Yours is in shambles after the Eurocup, wich was, as I recall, not a great succes. ![]()
The Europcup was a great succes. We came in 2nd, remember? We had a nice party! (coolest song ever 01:16) ![]()

True, the World Cup was dissapointing, yet we were there and you were where, exactly? ![]()
EDIT!
Whow brainfart, what the hell... I totally mixed both Cups up, jeez! Well atleast I got to post that movie which is awesome! ![]()
Granted, you did great in the World Cup, but that was 2 years ago. The Eurocup was an utter disaster.
Yes, we weren't there, but our national team is a team that's still growing while yours is falling apart:
- A player said he was glad Robben missed a penalty in the champions league, otherwise his ego would have been too great to deal with
- Robben refusing instructions of Van Gaal
- Huntelaar is frustrated to sit on the bench while being in excellent form
- Van Bommel's position was also heavily criticised as he wasn't playing in his club. This was one of the rigorous rules Van Gaal imposed when he started but got rid of when it came to his son in law ![]()
I predict a spicy game with us winning it.

You mean Van Marwijk, right? Van Bommel was the son-in-law of Van Marwijk. He does not have any connection whatsoever to our current coach, Van Gaal ![]()
Go Louis!

""We've had historically close matches" with Canada, Wambach said. "Because of the physical nature of the game, sometimes it's closer than maybe we think it ought to be.
"We don't want to make it a physical game. We want to play good soccer. But if it comes down to that, I know we're up for the challenge."
There will be a silver and bronze in women's football but the gold goes for best soccer! U! S! A!! U! S! A!!

Wait, what?
It's a high school cheer over here
We are ahead in the score
We are ahead in the score
Our victory is self-evident and for the sake of brevity we'll leave it at that
