1. Shotgun is preferred to pistol as self defense weapon, though some dorks argue it. They are probably trying to sell you a 5.7mm FN pistol.
2. An assault rifle is by definition a fully automatic, or burst automatic, rifle of medium weight and power. Its military purpose is to throw suppressive fire onto enemy infantry, to make them duck and cover. If they duck and cover they are not going to be shooting well, or charging and bayoneting your guys. If they are ducked down holding still they are better targets for artillery which is the big killer in combat. The fire of assault rifles may injure some of them, which is good because a kill takes 1 man out of the fight, while a casualty takes out 1 patient and 2 good samaritans. In Aurora, 12 died and 58 got injured. Assault rifles are about getting within 400 yards of the enemy, making him duck, then throwing explosives at him, until 13% of his force is injured and he has to retreat to regroup into a safe formation (where every man has people covering him without trying to look backwards)
3. There are no assault rifles for sale in US except to less than 10,000 registered machine gun dealers.
4. A steady shooter with a bolt-action deer rifle is a more lethal danger at 200m than a guy bumpfiring a semi-auto civilian "assault rifle".
A steady shooter with a bolt-action deer rifle is a lethal danger at 700m. A guy bumpfiring a semi-auto civilian "assault rifle" 700m away is about as dangerous as a bus.
5. Back when "assault rifles" were banned and military style rifles required a 3 day waiting period, a Mauser Karabiner 98k could be bought instantly as it was an obsolete military weapon. The Mauser was the standard issue rifle to German troops throughout WW2.
The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.
