Re: the NE has no electricity

Many many homes without power.

And I find it ironic that the electric car owners are pwned. They have no means to get to work. The gas drivers know the stations with power so top off there and are still working.

Subway? 100+ Degrees heat, no air cycling, and no escaltors. Hope you have really good deoderant.

And gas powered cars can take you to family 50+ miles away, provide quick cold air (if air conditioned) and even electricty if you have an inverter (I have three, 800 watts, 1500 watts and 2500 watts).

Even a hybrid could save ya. But an electric has no power when you have no power.

lulz @ jab on electric car oweners.

The technology just isn't there. They're SO impractical--even more so in dire circumstances, as you point out.

Dirty Iluvatar,

We waste a ton of taxpayer money subsidizing this garbage. Every ignorant wanker like you who doesn't give a [cluck] that money is being wasted is hurting the poor.

mocking truckers? Ilu if you ever run out of gas in America...just walk to Canada and beg asylum

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.
Steve Jobs has ruined this joke.

He is just jealous I earned $27,000 as of the first of June, putting me on track to earn $54,000 if the latter half follows suit.

Also he is jealous I have an employee, am correct on issues, have job security, am persuing office, and have university plans (all self funded to boot).

Let him wallow in his unimportance.

Re: the NE has no electricity

The US is still a emerging nation. A nation with such a third world grid cannot be a modern western nation. tongue

Re: the NE has no electricity

Don't gas pumps run on electricity?

And how do I pay for my gas if the credit / debit card machine doesn't work?

Re: the NE has no electricity

The US has a far more spread out population than most other "developed" nations. Perhaps your education is third-world, Firewing, considering that this obvious fact has escaped you.

I have an idea, xeno. Get money. Real money. Problem solved.

@Kemp: Fact is that the US grid relies on wooden power poles, which, as we can see, are often destroyed in storms. Leaving millions without electricity for days. This is archaic and bad for the economy.

That isn't really a fix..... people pay with credit cards at the pump because its convenient and because you earn stuff back to get more free things. Also people who walk around with lots of money in their pocket have to fear of being mugged and loose everything they had, as opposed to a credit card/debit card which they don't have to worry as much about if they are mugged.

This could be a long drawn out debate however...... i'm sure if i really cared your opinion and looked deep into the subject that a survey has been done somewhere where people hardly carry cash on them in this day of age.

Re: the NE has no electricity

Id like to add...

how do you think farms get the electricity when the power is out? or anyone else with a business or a hospital??

Everyone who "needs" one has a generator which they do not cost that much money.... With said generator you can power your car and go to work

Electric car.... buy a generator in-case you need it

Pretty obvious..

Re: the NE has no electricity

or simply have a backup battery to get a basic charge off of, just like a lot of gs drivers hold extra gas at thier house because of buying when its cheap and gas spikes ect.

but what is good for the economy is wasting tons of money on metallic posts that have to be based and maintained. your right you master of economics you. or perhaps we should take the tesla approach and have a energy emitter we can tap from anywhere... even though this requires emitting tons of wasted energy everywhere :DDD

Use cash :-D

Oh darn someone beat me to it

Re: the NE has no electricity

more electric cars equals more draw on the power plants equals shifting same amount of pollution from one spot to another.

Excellent, so lets use the entitlement money spent on welfare, pay decent wage, fire up those steel plants on the great lakes put ppl to work and replace all the wooden poles. ( non-sarcastic)

Re: the NE has no electricity

Actually, it's foolish to carry cash. As BigOne stated, it's more risky. Also, some states in the US are so corrupt that police will seize your cash under civil asset forfeiture laws for drug trafficking if they can argue it meets the standard for "preponderance of evidence," and carrying an "unusual" amount of cash satisfies the preponderance of evidence. Usually, stopping you for driving 3mph over the speed limit on a road known for drug trafficking and manipulating the police canine to signal drugs, will often be sufficient for them to claim probable cause to search your vehicle and seize any cash as evidence of drug trafficking.

As for power lines, overhead lines are always at risk of an outage. Hell, even squirrels will occasionally shut them down.

Re: the NE has no electricity

Firewing,

Metal poles would cost a hell of a lot more. And they'd be more dangerous. Underground lines can be hit by lighting, and they're harder to fix, more expensive to fix, and take more time.

The wooden poles are highly treated and strong as hell. While idiots do hit them with their cars, nobody dies because they can't be electrified when lines come down.

What do you propose as a superior alternative? Propose away.

TheBigOne,

Most generators available today cannot charge an electric car. Getting one that can ups the price.

Justinian I & TheBigOne,

If you're a little old lady who doesn't carry a .45 with hollow-points, sure it can be potentially risky.

But so is not being able to purchase anything when the grid is down. And nothing will ever change this. Anyone who doesn't keep cash handy for situations like this is a damn fool. You don't need to carry a lot all the time to be prepared. But you should certainly have some available.

Re: the NE has no electricity

You would use the generator in a power outage.....

the same way they are used now for a "crunch" gas will still be used if we all had electric cars for other items on the plate. why couldn't it be used as a backup ?

Re: the NE has no electricity

V.Kemp,

Fair enough. Keeping some cash readily available in preparation for an emergency is something I can agree with.

Re: the NE has no electricity

The german power poles are made of german steel, designed for eternity wink It is very rare that they brake and even than the grid is designed to compensate a structural failure. Today Germany invests billions in a new grid to transport offshore wind energy into the interior.

Proposal: Instead of investing billions for weapons and wars abroad, invest some of this cash in a new grid.

I lean Libertarian. You don't have to sell me on stopping waste. tongue

I still wouldn't want to work on a huge conductor, though. And, considering the size of the USA, I'd want to see a pricetag. Eternity sounds nice, though.
