Syria shot down a recon fighter in International waters 15 minutes after it briefly strayed into Syrian airspace.

No warnings were given and both pilots are presumed lost.

Turkey is asking for NATO assistance. This could be the first time the defense clause is called upon. Obama will be game for it in my opinion... he needs a distraction from his horrible gaffs recently and the pending end of Obamacare.

It will probably be a major air raid with continous air attacks but few boots on the ground. Greece will say no for their hatred of Turkey but I think the rest of Europe will say yes to spite Greece and to distract from the bad economic news rolling nonstop inside Europe.

My friends in my calculations war is about a week away.


Am I right? Or am I wrong?

The first "call" was 9/11, even when the US didn't really call. The alliance reacted on its own, since Bush jr. was somewhere above the US in Airforce 1.

Obama won't risk a war for shot down turkish F-4. The Europeans have other problems atm. So, just a few harsh words and some hot air.

Turkey and Syria have a long history of disputed territory. They have kind of wanted to invade anyway. My bets are they deliberately provoked Syria to cause a diplomatic chain of events that will excuse their military ambitions. I also have little doubt that Jordan is secretly collaborating with Turkey to partition Syria between them.

Keep in mind, Turkey's prime minister has explicitly stated that the Armenian genocide never happened, because Muslims can't commit genocide.

With the weapons coming from Russia? Syria knows Libya fell to an air war, I bet more than half of the weapons being purchased are for anti-air. (And that those are on discount so Russia can see how the systems work)

if Turkey wants to go in it would provide Obama perfect cover, because he can tell the Right he is honoring NATO and he can blah to the Left about humanitarian missions

actually that will work for Romney too

only problem is the United States would spend $100 billion to move 30,000 troops into Syria and our generals will be writing nasty memos saying Turkey won't spend that much, if they get published it will hurt NATO.  If Turkey has to win on its own, it may pull out of NATO and that may end NATO.  Since 1991 NATO has been a consolation prize for being kept out of EU.  Now EU doesn't look so hot, NATO might not be strong enough to beat 3rd world armies like Afghanistan and Syria, and if you have to do a deal with Russia to get by, why open negotations by slapping their face with NATO membership?  "Hi I'm the forward base for USA to invade you, how's about giving me a break?"

The core joke of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is that of course no civilization would develop personal computers with instant remote database recovery, and then waste this technology to find good drinks.

It is one thing for the US waging war across the oceans. Turkey would have to fight a nasty land war with many killed. NATO would back them only with an aggression by Syria. If the leaders of Syria are a bit sane, than they won't shut down another plane. No new problems, no war. Turkey had its chance and passed it.
