Re: Dart - game or a sport?

Who says committees such as the Olympic committee is the one who ultimately defines what is a sport or not. Also in their case it's called Olympic Games and not Olympic Sports.

As humi stated; Games and sports are closely related. But it is the athletic component that differentiates those two. If you look it up in a dictionary or on wikipedia as Poley did, it is not a coincidence that the athletics component is always mentioned.

Sports is not sports without the athletic component.

Re: Dart - game or a sport?

Beyond that definition of sports, I would say that a true sport also has an direct active competitive element. Such as football, tennis, etc. Where 1 or more are actually competing with 1 or more others. Unlike things such as weight lifting.

So what is your point with this post Wendy tongue

In the context of our discussion only the following use of the word sports is fitting:
"1. In athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."

Re: Dart - game or a sport?

Under that definition competitive dancing or shopping would also be a sport. Considering that "mockery; ridicule; derision:" is also a correct answer in the dictionary it is obvious the word is used for more things.

So different answers are correct for different contexts. So I stand by my earlier post. In this context I would say that the only correct related definition is: "1. an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."

Where darts is just a non athletic activity requiring skill. Just a game.

Re: Dart - game or a sport?

& how much athletic ability is required for fishing? Hardly any from what I recall as well as Golf, hardly sporty/athletic under your definition smile

Re: Dart - game or a sport?

The dictionary is obviously contradicting itself by saying that fishing and bowling are athletic activities. How can we trust his opinion from now on sad

And yea! I don't think those are sports at all.
