Lumber: We export a lot of timber to China and import some lumber from Canada. Oregon used to be THE supplier of wood in the United States. Our Douglas Fir is really a nice straight log usually.

We currently utilize much less than we could and the Fed owns a lot of lands as well. They say there is an owl messing up the Spotted owl... if we logged between them it could create a 'firebreak'


Driving: As currently I drive we seems more appropriate


Crime: it is far more damaging not to imprison these people. while there is a cost associated with jail and prison the amounts of damage they do far exceeds the cost to imprison them and prison is a strong deterent versus continued crime.

Television: Radio is easier while over the road. However due to circumstances I expect to be all over local media and to be thoroughly trashed as a result of my taking out the leader of the Democrats in Oregon. It's the price of being Republican and Conservative...

Just curious, but you have any facts that support this? Does recidivism go down after having spent time in jail versus those criminals that don't go?

No I'm asking if Jail time is really a deterrent for recidivists or is it something that they accept as a part of their culture and not viewed as punishment. I'm asking if there is any proof that it works against recidivists or is it only a deterrent for law abiding citizens. If someone is pathological in their recidivism does imposing harsher jail times really affect their choice to commit a crime?

What I am asking is why you believe jail is important as opposed to say proper behavioural rehabilitation and if there are any studies that show that jail decreases crime rates.

Actually, Alch makes a good point...in Australia, the crime rate went down when the death penalty was abolished (ie, weaker punishments dropped the crime rate, go figure tongue)...also, one could argue that overflowing prisons goes to show that the current deterrent really isn't working. Prison helps society forget/isolate criminals, and as far as a deterrent I think it doesn't work that well (just my 2 cents, can dig up references if I need to)

instead of jail, you do slave labour for as many days/months/years you are sentanced for..

You get minimum rations of food, housing and minimum requirements for living..

Work on agriculture / basic human needs production.. (or wherever the government deems your services will produce a net benefit to the economy without having to spend more on keeping an eye on you)

my suggestion being - corden off a large portion of our countryside not in use currently and force to work inside this area. Guards posted around the site just like a jail..


Commiting a crime should remove SOME of your civil liberties for the duration of your sentance. People have too much potential to be wasting sitting in a cell. Lets get use out of them. I believe it will actually help to maintain order as they will be so god damn tired from working all day, they will just want to sleep.

Also give slaves a small portion of marijuana every night to help sleep and calm all inmates. No rebellion/revolt as everyone is too high to do anything tongue

Jail is not the only solution.... But in Oregon we have a severe problem


One man stole more than 100 cars (I believe it was 124) before he was charged even once.

The police will not arrest because they say the DA won't charge on certain crimes or certain levels of crime.

The DA will say he lacks beds... and it is true... often, way to often, a criminal will be out in a week for lack of bed space and a number of early release programs weighed on severity to help ease space.

We have a prison and a jail built, the power works, everything is ready... but they are not opened.


While I believe in alternatives, we need the space to help make it beyond a 'time out'. I lived with a number of people fresh out from jail when I got scammed. All of them were also ex-addicts though I do not know their crimes. However the nature of the program was that only one got arrested again, one other relapsed and the rest were doing well.

You might label me an all of the above type in crime issues. I believe in rehab, I believe in jail time, I believe in second chances, I believe in chain gang work, I believe in profiling and I believe in throwing the whole book at repeat offenders.

Tommy Thompson was the old governor and then tried/failed to run for president now hes running for state senate

he has a person who opened a Facebook page tag's him in pics "broadens the horizon for supporters"  as if you "like" a picture all of your friends see the pic, so forth and so forth.. Cheap advertisement indeed.

The person who runs the page for Tommy also does happy birthday's to everyone on his list every day which creates more advertisement.
