Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Mayor Bloomberg has initiated a city wide ban on Soda's, Coffee's, Tea's and other drinks with sugar in them over a certain size.

The ban would prevent you from buying a large drink in theatres, sporting events, from sidewalk vendors, resteraunts, and other outlets.

Mayor Bloomberg is quoted as saying "You want more then buy two drinks" and "we are not taking rights way, we are just you informed".

The New York State Legislature is considering a law that would prevent the Mayor from succeeding with his ban.

The mayor even went so far as to say he would expect Governor Cuomo to veto any such law.

If I am taking a girl to see a three hour movie I want to be able to buy her and me a very large drink and carry those two with me to the seats ONE TIME. If I am at a major game like the Super Bowl I want to have a large drink. When it is 100 degrees out I don't care what the drink is so long as it is cold and big.

Part of me doesn't like the ban for the "Big Brother" reason but at the same time another part of me is saying "GOD DAMN IT STOP BEING SUCH FATTIES".

Seriously, you don't not need a litre of soft drink in one sitting or even in a single day.

You don't change people's behavior my affecting the supply side. You do it with by cutting the demand. Pretentious New Yorker idiots.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Buy 2 16oz bottles for 32 instead of 24!

Not only is he trying to be a babysitter, he's a shitty one.

so I say we swing at his face but check it.  "Hey, you're an asshole"

I'll have a 64 fl oz water. Plenty of ice. The human body doesn't need that much in an entire day... let alone to get through a film or a baseball game. To get through Hollywood's latest or baseball you need to be a worthless moron.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

well it depends on how hot it is and what you're doing, I think you could lose 64 ozs of water in one day if you're reckless

and yeah I havent seen a movie since....I don't remember

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

You could, The Yell, but not by sitting in a cinema, watching a movie.

As much as I agree its absolutely ridiculous to drink a liter of soda in one sitting, I don't like the idea of banning it.

I live in Sudan. It's 45c. It's arid and dehydration is a major danger. And yes I can easily sweat 2 litres a day. But our water intake need not be solely from drinks. Salad, fruits, soups, etc all have a high water content.

It is not the size of a drink, the sugar is important.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Force it?

As is obvious, and has been explained here, this stupid suggested law would do nothing to "force" people to consumer less sugar. If it resulted in them buying 2 16oz beverages frequently (neither of us has that data, you wanna study fat slobs with no self control?) instead, it might even cause them to consume more.

Not only is your authoritarian thinking disgusting, it's stupid.

AND it doesn't apply to fruity drinks, so if you want a fruit smoothie with tons of sugar, you can still get a 32 oz

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Sodas should be charged by weight, like frozen yogurt. Maybe include some taxes too, like tobacco.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

The problem is that supply is driven by demand, so laws intended to restrict supply are generally less effective. The more effective and less controversial strategy would be education. Educate people on the costs of sugar consumption, and suppliers will respond to meet the needs of shifting consumer tastes.

People don't want to be disabled or hasten their deaths when they age, so they'll adjust their behavior if they are informed. Education even compelled me to restrict my sugar consumption a long time ago.

However, one problem with supply is that idiots like Bush subsidized corn, which made it profitable to produce "high fructose corn syrup." Not only should there not be restrictions, but the government should not artificially increase supply either.

The Yell. I am in the desert and haven't died yet.
Justinian. Agree that subsidised food production is bad. Taxation is an option, better arguably to tax luxuries more and income less. Education may work but I know the dangers of food and still consume them.
V Kemp. Food and drink isn't consumed logically. Often its impulse and emotional. So if you reduce portion sizes people do consume less.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Why charge people extra for soda because SOME people are fat, Simon? Many healthy people enjoy soda. If fat people are costing us more in healthcare, charge them more for that healthcare. Making things overly complicated by charging them for healthcare in their beverages and charging healthy people because of something they're not contributing to/benefiting from is unjust and stupid.

Mace, people also have brains. People who're using their brains should not be taxed to pay for the costs incurred by morons who don't use theirs. Let the free market determine portion sizes. You're not my [clucking] nanny, you don't have any right to be, and I sure as hell don't need one. Let government babysitters be optional. This shit isn't in the constitution and I certainly don't need it/to be paying for it.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Do you do everything your government advises? If you're thirsty, drink. But don't buy into specific numbers.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

Good job missing the point.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

The Yell's point was easily missed.

I don't think soda is mentioned in the US Constitution. So I am not sure why you raise it. I do think the principles of the United States would not be broken by taxing soda.

Re: NY Mayor Bloomberg bans large soda's and Starbucks Venti Coffee's

By the time you're thirsty, you're in trouble.

General liberty is raised in the Constitution:

        others retained by the people.
