Topic: Modern Unions

Are Unions really necessary now?  They had a purpose when companies were oppressive.  Now, however, the unions have become the oppressors.  The bullies on the block.  extorting from their members employers.  It seems as though they are against small business which is strange because they claim to support the small laborers and that is what small business is.

the reason i say they seem to be against small business is from my own experience dealing with them.  I worked in a family business for five years.  We didnt have many employees but we were small so we didnt need anymore and we werent part of any union.  we were hired to do make a sign for a new shopping mall that was being constructed.  well we made the sign and pulled the permit for it. but when we went to install the sign the client came to us and told us just to give him the sign and he would have a different union endorsed company to install it because the union had threatened to have the construction workers who were working on the building to walk off the site if none union workers(me) came on the site.

that doesnt make sense to me.  what about you?

Re: Modern Unions

That's not universally true.
I assume you're from the Anglo-Saxon world, where unions took a different path then they took on the Western Europe mainland.

Unions over there have become institutionalised aren't oppressers, but bodies to protect the workers and they are the ones to talk to when the workers are disgruntled. They're far from the "bullies" as you speak of them tongue

God: Behold ye angels, I have created the ass.. Throughout the ages to come men and women shall grab hold of these and shout my name...

Re: Modern Unions

And in America, they are bullies, so... moving back to the proposed topic at hand...?

Well, he didn't specify a region ME..

They're very useful and important over here.

"They're very useful and important over here."

No theyr're not, they're a nuisance and get in the way of a proper market driven economy.

Je maintiendrai

Re: Modern Unions

The only thing I've ever seen Unions do is keep the incomptent employed.  My parent's worked at a pork plant where they slaughter and butcher pigs.  One man dropped a piece of meat on the floor, picked it up and just threw it back in with the rest.  When the manager told him he was fired, this was the last straw in a long line of screw ups, he went to the Union and they managed to keep him employed.  One place I worked someone regularly took 2 hours to perform a task that should have taken 15 minutes and the management couldn't fire him cause of the union.  Any need there may have been for unions has passed with the introduction of labour laws.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Re: Modern Unions

They remain the voice of the workers in many large firms though, their existence makes it easier for the directors to discuss things with the workers.

Re: Modern Unions

Since when does a Market driven Economy and Community affairs correlate ?
I dont understand you Leftists ??

@ Skoe

"Stop worrying about making money".... explain that.
Examples....in the Micro......not a broad brushed, bullshit talking point.

Explain to me, how the market is connected to the DETRIMENT of the people.

Economists can give you MANY MANY examples how Govt. intervention and controls INCREASE the burden of the final price of a product/service.

What you are trying to say is that Govt. is more efficient than Market Forces.....Explain your position.

@DPS

I actually look at it from the opposite side.  Unions control wage.  This keeps the drive of the worker in check, and stifles the actual ability of the average worker.  It gives seniority preference over actual performance, and puts a ceiling on wage for the better worker.

IF I have a firm and I dont have to pay my best workers more money to keep them.....because of a Union.....ROFL....Im ahead of the game.
Eventually, I can get rid of sub-par workers.  It will just take some time.

Re: Modern Unions

BW I think you have lived in New York too long.

"It just takes some time"-- the rest of the country prefers it take as long as the words "You're fired" to go from the boss' lips to the snafu's ear.

I have busted my ass in a press shop that was too poor for a union-- they don't bother with outfits that won't support their dues. OK fair enough but spare me the "Voice of the Common People" crap.

Now what they're doing in CA is striking to force a smaller pension package for new hires so the company can afford the older more generous package for the veteran employees.  You work at those places, they make you join a union, and then they tie you into a budget pension plan In The Name Of The Worker. Thats if they hire Americans and not skilled illegals.

Re: Modern Unions

@ Yell

Yes, for sure.  Even In my small business, where I dont have Union Labor, when I let a a guy....and believe me people, as an employer...there is NOTHING more wasteful than training a person, only to let them go.  I do all I can before firing is needed.

With that Yell, I fire a guy, and he threatens me with going to the labor board.  Unreal.  They never come after me, just a waste of resources....GOVT.... that goes wasted.

The Press shop you worked in Yell, w/o Union......did you or the better workers have wage leverage vs. the boss ??
I mean, were they fair ??
I believe myself to be a fair employer.....I for sure expect more out of my guys than a union shop does.

They have 15 min break mourn, and afternoon.
A paid lunch hour.
and when the bell strikes 5PM....out the door they go.

My job sight...
On sight by 9AM, if its a slow day and you are late....you go home w/o Pay.
I have a runner/trainee/low guy run for lunch, that I pay for......When the meal comes you eat, and you get back to work.
You get a chance for a break Mourn and Afternoon, if its a slow day....not if we are under the gun
If under the gun...on a deadline  we "HUMP"
the Day is done, when we meat the days goal.  Could be 2-3PM, could be 8PM, 9, hell we have gone into the early mourn to meet a deadline.

My job sight runs MUCH more efficient than a union sight.
We demo and build 2X faster usually w/50% of the people of a union sight, for about 2/3rds the cost.

My top 2 men are paid better than Union guys.
My workers are not....but I think they get a better education.
We dont have medical or pension.....but, I stress that my guys save into an IRA, and enroll w/the state insurance option.
Its a co-pay HMO based on income.

Re: Modern Unions

Well it was a small outfit, now defunct, it printed church bulletins in five states in competition with JS Paluch who does them in 50 states.

The bulletin is free to the church, they get 2-6 pages of copy and their choice of cover and the printer sells a page of ads on the back to advertisers.

We got about the minimum wage--i'm sure the best pressmen got a lot more cause they bougt a house-- and we worked by the job, so if crap broke down for four hours you went home four hours late. The stuff had to be out by Friday night.

No health benefits and we worked in non-airconditioned pressroom, our presses were a lot of junk so we learned how to jury-rig them with duct-tape and spot-welding. One day OSHA told us to stop working elbow deep in kerosene without gloves because it causes cancer, which is good to know.

But I guess it was pretty fair, you either did you share or you got called out by eight guys, we were allowed to horseplay back there. I was known as a hitman because I can throw a quart of water thirty feet through a four-inch gap in an ajar doorway and be gone before it hits the target. Front office let us alone and talked to our crew chief.

It went under because the owner believed in hiring his drinking buddies...don't think a stronger union can stop that!
