There is a helium shortage because republicans in 1996 passed a law doing away with federal government production of helium. There is a national storage of helium in the United States, and it is producable via nuclear reactor (which greenies hate btw).

There is the problem of freed helium literally floating away into space.

Helium can escape all containers eventually. It is mined out to obtain. When it escapes its container it goes straight to space.

Thus if nuclear reactors could not produce it... we would run out eventually.
