Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

I have posted before of the United States having more oil than the rest of the World combined before, and used USGS data to back this up.

In fact no one has even tried mentioning the words peak oil recently.

But today I have to announce.... We have.... *drumroll*  TWICE THE OIL OF ALL THE REST OF THE WORLD COMBINED *fireworks*

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/05/13/in-the-american-west-an-ocean-of-oil/

Think on that... I have posted that we have a 300 year supply of oil here in the United States before...

Now we have a 600 year supply.

SIX HUNDRED YEARS!

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

Problem: We lack the technology to drill it cost effectively.

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

Actually that is incorrect.

Currently we can easily access 2/3 of the 'feasible' oil without any increases in current gear. The rest requires predicted increases to fracking and drilling methods (lateral and horizontal drilling combined with fracking)

Pdf and I have not looked, supposed to cover the methods

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

I think this PDF is only talking about 'energy efficiency' in extracting energy from various sources, as in, a unit of harvested oil will contain more energy than what was spent to harvest it. Didn't seem to talk about methods or cost effectiveness. But then again, I only briefed it.

Ahhh, well suffice to say several groups are even now in a minor way harvesting from this formation.

If oil lasts longer than we expected, then good for us, will give us a smoother transformation to cleaner fuels, regarding the rate of drilling and consumption, i dont see why we should up it tbh, we are causing climatechange fast enough as it is

This. Why drill a source that is limited? And you can't expect oil demand to be stagnant. As more countries industrialize, oil demand goes up.

Drilling and refining petroleum is more important than declaring the prairie as it is now is the way our great grandkids must see it.  Let's get up to 90% petroleum self-sufficiency

"SIX HUNDRED YEARS!"
If its true, it could be 100 or 1000 as well. You can only guess the amount, not the timescale.

Its not verified. But it would be a good thing if the world was less dependent on the uss... I mean Russia. It would also give us time to develop fusion and solve our energy question for ever. For now I remain skeptical however. I wait for this news to be confirmed by more then one source.

I thought we were rated at having almost 1000yrs of oil just from the Bakken Reserve alone.

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

The Bakken reserve gets upgraded periodically. They always underestimate field sizes at first.

This field was verified by the USGS and their info was vetted by the Rand Corporation.

Aka the oil does exist Little Paul, though as always this is a 'low estimiate' that will grow with actual tapping.

I am actually going to review the USGS info on all oil fields again and re-run my full numbers. I will properly annote it and linkify it and make it a major post elsewhere.

hey wait a minute, does this mean the SuperVolcano could not only coat 35 states with 10 feet of ash and volcanic glass pebbles, it might also rain burning oil?

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

I know that the Bakken Reserve holds more oil than we can actually get to with current drilling technologies. i know in 08 it was estimated at 3-4 billion barrels of attainable oil. I thought i saw something from 2011 saying that it had more than doubled in attainable oil but ill have to look to see if i can find it again.

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

Noir, you're obviously a scientist. Can you link us to your conclusive evidence of man-caused climate change?

I'm tired of the garbage science that our political overlords keep pointing to. I'm an educated man. I understand that correlation of CO2 and temperatures does not equate with causation, especially when we find that CO2 changes tend to lag behind temperature by a hundred years. I'm tired of scientists desperate for government money pretending they don't understand science or basic logic.

Purin, because it's a fraction the price of other sources of energy. Billions across the globe can't afford energy as it is. Telling them they need to pay 5-10x+ more because your political overlords tell you it's for the planet is a liiiiiittle bit elitist and arrogant.

If you're a scientist like Noir, please provide the aforementioned data I asked for. I want to believe. But you haven't offered me any evidence. That many ignorant slobs lazily buy into something is not evidence.

Re: Just when you thought the USA was hoarding a lot of oil...

Kemp if you are so educated you would have known that there is no one paper or research that can "prove" that the global warming is man made. This is however the consensus when you view the worlds scientists as a whole and it is thus the most backed up hypothesis and most credible one.

No.  It is equally credible that a "consensus" of scientists have rallied around an inadequate hypothesis for the operation of global climate, and are now putting SOCIAL pressure on all critics of this inadequate paradigm to produce a compelling alternative paradigm or STFU about the creaky holes in the fallacious paradigm.  Thomas Kuhn wrote about the asymmetric nature of science over 40 years ago.

No, it's not a consensus. You've provided absolutely no basis for the assumption that it's a credible hypothesis. I questioned your appeals to authority: Repeating them does not make a case for your ignorant claims.
