Alright.  I've had this idea for an end-of-the-world scenario brewing for quite a while.  I believe it is realistic.  I am not saying it is likely or unlikely.

I want to post it in "Politics" because I think a lot of discussions on various political issues may arise from it. 

It is not a story or a role play. 

It is simply a postulation as to how an apocalyptic collapse of human civilization might occur.

It is my hope that people will see it as realistic, and thus be alarmed by it; see it as a warning for us begin to change the way our civilization does things so as to avoid such a scenario.

I hope for input from the community in the following ways:

1.  Are the events I am postulating in the scenario realistic or not?
2.  What might occur that I have missed?
3.  What parts of the scenario might result in effects other than what I suggest?
4.  What could be done so as to avoid such a scenario?

Now, as for the first post:

The scenario starts with events as they are unfolding currently in Syria and Iran.  The Assad regime, in a bid to hold the regime together, has aligned with the Iranians, who give their military support.  The Russians, not wanting to lose their strategic naval base in at Tartus to a new Syrian regime, side with the Assads as well, pledging, though, to facilitate the role of UN observers.

Rumors of the coming of Mahdi start to spread among the Sunni clerics / the coming of the 12th Imam spread amidst the Shia clerics. Hamas and Hezbollah in Gaza and Lebanon are having their regular tit-for-tat exchanges with Israel.  USA, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, the US, Pakistan, India, China, North Korea, South Korea, NATO countries, Turkey, Iraq have all raised DEFCON levels after reports of the rumors of Mahdi / the 12th Imam start surfacing.

Then, Iran test-detonates a nuke, straight smack-dab in the waters of the Straight of Hormuz.

DEFCON levels virtually everywhere top-out.

Global communications, electronic financial transactions, trading - everything is blacked out between all nations everywhere.  Only highest diplomatic communication channels are open between nations, and only financial transactions between central banks are permitted.

We're talking no radio domestic communication virtually anywhere: radio / internet / television / phone - even shortwave radio jammed.  The only domestic communications are via military channels and state / public broadcasting on emergency channels.

You forgot to mention Israel got nervous and nukes Iran.

Pakistan gets excited and says "why not?" then nukes India.

India goes "Oh snap! We're getting eve teased by the Pakis in the balls!" and nukes Pakistan back...and China too, for the border war a few decades go.

China goes WTF?? and nukes India back, and Taiwan and Japan. A few nukes "accidentally" heads towards the US.

In the US, Obama goes "don't worry! we're about to be swept away by the tides of change! Just as I promised! Now is the time to look forward...by nuking Mexico and Colombia! You know, to fix immigration, and our prostitution problem".

North Korea use the confusion to invade South Korea, but gets wtfpwned. NK retreats and says "let's make benefit glorious nation of North Korea by nuking the South!" But the missile from China was a dud and they nuke themselves.

the UK, France, and Russia meet in a ski resort in Switzerland and goes "well gentlemen, we spent all that money, but never used them, this is our last chance, it's now or never!" and sends off their nukes everywhere while crying "God save the Queen!" "Vive la France" and "Vladimir Putin for president!"

Meanwhile back in the US, Obama gets out of the bunker and goes, "well, let's make sure China is dead so we don't have to pay back our debt" then sends nukes towards China.

We'll be fine. Robot technology (from aliens) currently kept secret by the elite will be stolen. We'll all live in a utopia where we never have to work for anything and we'll have everything we want. The end.

Yeah, this is clearly a roleplay (and there is no political discussion arising from it, or even political content in the original post)...

If you want to have a discussion on international relations in the middle east, then do so, this belongs in Roleplay and as such, moved tongue

This is what I was wondering, too...

Nations do have the power to black out / limit their own public from communicating with the outside world - North Korea, China (their 'Great Firewall'), and recently in Syria.  Initially, most nations would choose to implement a temporary communications blackout until they figured out what was going on:  who would be allied with whom, who would be neutral, and who would declare war on whom.  When that were all sorted out, nations' governments would choose the extent they would control public communications' networks.

Re: trade

On one side, they attempt to stop trade between those countries with whom they would go to war; they'd take measures to stop the facilitating via SWIFT their enemy's capability to trade with anyone, we've seen them do this already to Iran. 

Then, the second objective would be to contain damage to the financial markets, especially their own.  To do so nations would initially suspend trading, and then control trading, monopolizing all financial transactions through FEDWIRE / governmental central banks networks' rather than SWIFT.  They'd limit trade to only those countries they considered their 'allies'.

Test-nuke by Iran in the straight of Hormuz would stop the flow of oil, at least temporarily, would it not?

Wouldn't such act as a catalyst for an economic collapse, necessitating closing world markets and suspending SWIFT transfers?

Part 2:

Over the course of the blackout which lasts quite a long time, a secondary feed of news and market information is streamed to the international media, keeping up appearances that nothing has actually happened; that everything is normal. The nuclear blast in the Straight of Hormuz successfully covered up and financial sectors around the world function unawares. Only the ultra top secret circles of the international community are aware that the nations of Earth are on the brink of total war.

On top diplomatic channels reserved for the international religious community, the Pope declares 6 miracles confirmed over the course of the first during 3 days of the standoff. During this time, he is on Cyprus. At the end of the 6th miracle declared, there is an assassination attempt on him which fails. After his return to the Vatican, he declares another 3 miracles confirmed.

(Apparently, one of the nine miracles confirmed by the Pope is rumored to be the fact that 9 days into the "blackout" no further hostilities have broken out between nations).

Three of the nine miracles are confirmed by the Orthodox / Coptics. None of the Protestants groups confirm any. One miracle is confirmed by the Sunnis and anther by the Shias.

Meanwhile, in a bid to create consensus on the need to stand down, central banks coordinate the exchange of funds between nations in such a way that over 99% of the world's wealth ends up in one bank account that no nation knows about and no nation has access to.

There is virtually no chatter on diplomatic channels except for token transfers of the 0.1% of the world's remaining wealth, the transfer of which which are recognized as symbolic tokens of pledges of support by one country to another, determined by the size of the transfers.

Finally, at the end of the first 2 weeks of such transfers, the vast majority of the world's remaining wealth is transferred to Saudi Arabia, which then in turn sends half to Iran.

The moment of truth occurs when Iran transfers a token back to Saudi Arabia, thereby ending the stand-off, with nations lowering their DEFCON levels a tad.

The vast majority of the world's wealth, however, remains locked away in one account inaccessible to any nation on Earth except the holding nation: the central bank of -----.
