Re: The Trial against Anders Behring Breivik (Norwegian Massacre of 22.7)

Im not sure how many of you are aware or remember the attacks that killed 77 people in Oslo and Utoya last summer.

The trial against the admitted offender has now started, and i know alot of international media is following it.

As a norwegian it is impossible to escape this happening, both due to personal interest and enormous media pressure. I was just wondering if anyone else is paying attention, and if anyone out there has any interesting points of view.

it strikes us Californians as bizarre that he's trying to argue sanity to avoid the life confinement of an asylum, when being sane will get him a maximum of 21 years.

Re: The Trial against Anders Behring Breivik (Norwegian Massacre of 22.7)

Thats incorrect tho Yell:

When sentenced to ordinary prison in Norway, 21 years is the max. However in special cases, that include a significant risk of him committing more crimes, the judge can add what you would called confinement. This means that before any possible release or parole, it will be have to be assessed wether or not it is safe to release him back into society. Thus that kind of sentence can in extreme cases (like this) in fact mean prison for life.

He is personally arguing sanity because he (according to himself) would see it as an insult and failure to be viewed as insane, and it would ofcourse discredit his political views

he kills 77 people and only gets 21 years in prison?  WOW

Re: The Trial against Anders Behring Breivik (Norwegian Massacre of 22.7)

Read above post, but yes 21 is maximum in Norway, unless u are sentenced to confinement, which he will be

YOU ARE BARBARIANS!!!  everyone knows civilized countries give 20 to life and then offer parole every 3 years
unless you condemn the government in the name of Islam, then you can be assassinated with a robot missile or locked up in Cuba until we want to let you go to Afghanistan and get blown up with a robot missile...

Damn this country worked better with lynch mobs

Re: The Trial against Anders Behring Breivik (Norwegian Massacre of 22.7)

Not necisarily.

It is simply that before you can be released from prison, you will be evaluated by someone (a board or psychologist etc) and if they conclude that there is a significant risk that you will commit more crimes, they will not release you.

Thus, if you are mentally unstabile and violent, and never improve, they can effectively keep you in prison for life if they always have to conclude that you are a danger to society.

well American law descended from British law
and British law was full of bastards
so we forbade that sort of crap
until we started a generational war with Al Qaeda

IN MY DAY they still studied the trial of William Penn in school.  The Brits wanted him convicted of unlawful assembly and when the jury wouldn't convict him they were held without food and water til they gave a verdict the judge liked.  Penn's dad was a royal favorite and helped him get permission to move to America where he founded Pennsylvania.  His example was remembered until the day Americans could write their own  rules about trials.

Re: The Trial against Anders Behring Breivik (Norwegian Massacre of 22.7)

I like the Norwegian system. It sounds more flexible. You have the maximum sentence that your crime warrants, but you can also be confined further if you are deemed dangerous to society. Personally, I would take that concept further, but anyway, that guy is probably just a psychopath.

He targeted the labour party youth in Norway as he sees the imigrant-friendly labour party as the direct cause of the undesireble imigration he wishes to prevent

Yell,

The only people who get caught are idiots who don't do their online homework, are indiscreet, or they make a scene.

However, honesty embodies power, so I would be honest to maintain my dignity if I were unfortunately victimized.

At least the EU understands that sex is a cheaper deterrent to violence than increased police presence.

sorry to drift offtopic, but the guy did it, he says he did it, we knew he said he did it, we're just waiting for Norway to decide if he meets their level of sane or not...didn't know he could be confined indefinitely, then if so they might as well deny him a soapbox

"I remember someting about him already being declared sane."

The first psychiatric test declared him insane, but the second one declared him sane.

Based on what he's saying in court, it's not a stretch (at least to me) for people to judge him delusional.
