Guinness World Records recognized NASA's X-43A scramjet with a new world speed record for a jet-powered aircraft - Mach 9.6, or nearly 7,000 mph. The X-43A set the new mark and broke its own world record on its third and final flight on Nov. 16, 2004.

In March 2004, the X-43A set the previous record of Mach 6.8 (nearly 5,000 mph). The fastest air-breathing, manned vehicle, the U.S. Air Force SR-71, achieved slightly more than Mach 3.2. The X-43A more than doubled, then tripled, the top speed of the jet-powered SR-71.

the SR-71 has been retired for several years now and that was what 1960's technology here we are 2008 and we have planes that cruise.....i mean crusie no after burners or rockest just cruising at mach 2 or so for example F-22 JSF.

My ponit is why retire the worlds fastest and best reconissance plane for ( SR-71 ) or why would you or why do ppl trade in their old cars....easy answer for a better one....a car with better mpg or more acessories or more power but indeed better...so why retire the SR-71 with the top speed til this day still classified.....for a better plane......i use to live in Victorville,CA-92932 which is about a 2 hour drive to edwards AFB and i go to all the air shows and i asked an officer giving a speech kinda of tour guide.....why was the SR-71 retired and the top speed still classified? He said cause they have satillites that can do the job better at a reasonable cost and doesnt put human lifes on the line.......I said BS.....a man craft is always better than an AI or unmmaned craft.....and you could never put AI or ummaned carft to do important jobs...they just dont have the reason to reason or morale thoughts and actions......so its been out for awhile project auora x-44 some say but who knows...all i know in 1960s we were able to hit mach 3+ so why isnt it now possible to hit 3-5x faster or mach 10+......just my opinion
