Topic: Custom galaxies

Bring back custom galaxies so people can experiment with different things, see what works best, whats most fun, and play with their friends. It would also give people stuck in inactive/bad fams something to do instead of quitting and playing some other game tongue

I doubt it will be much strain on the server with the current IC population.

Re: Custom galaxies

if it would be that easy to do, then we didnt need developers to change the game tongue
and we cant use quiters! no game can.

Re: Custom galaxies

Paininside the systems to create custom galaxies were in place in like year 2000... the difference is that now only the mods have access to it instead of all players.

A few more possible benefits of bringing back custom galaxies:

1) People whining about mods not knowing how to create galaxies can try creating their own and see if they can do better!

2) People in the same locality, e.g. a particular school's students can create a galaxy as a competition for themselves

3) People having forum-ego-wars could challenge the other to a duel in a custom galaxy

Re: Custom galaxies

My best friend just mentioned to this me actually.

I don't know exactly why they were removed, but I'm not sure if the system in place still exists for this.  I know the mods have the ability to change galaxy settings but I think custom galaxies were a little more than just adjusting galaxy options.  In any case, I can't find reference to them anywhere in the code so it's possible that they were removed from the game entirely.

I agree though, this would be a welcome (re)addition.  I think some details would need to be ironed out though, so maybe this is a good opportunity for doing just that.  What do you guys remember about the custom galaxies?  The biggest thing I remembered was very small and organized team based games.  Stuff like country vs country, mw players vs andro players, that kind of thing.

I guess to ask it a different way, what would you like to see in a custom game that makes it different than "just another galaxy"?

Re: Custom galaxies

i remembered playing custom galaxy...the map was small and u get to invite ur friends to play...i think iwas alone, playing infra just for fun without worrying about others to attack me....it feel like im testing my skills on infra growth...

however, i think it would be good if it was only two fams challenging each other...lets say player A talk crap about player B that player A is better attacker than player B...so they can duel in custom glaxy, invitting their friends as their infra builders. i think it would be fun.

Let's say, Lee's fam vs Orbit's fam....im betting on Orbit. :-P

Re: Custom galaxies

I think it might have been disabled back then because the stoneage server at that time couldn't handle the load of 10k players + custom galaxies. We shouldn't have that problem anymore.

From what I remember of it, there were options like galaxy size, galaxy password, and a couple of other things. What the mods have now just seems like an improved version of custom galaxies with more options.

Should try talking to stefan, he might have the custom galaxy code around somewhere. Actually a better idea would be to modify the system mods use so that its available to all players (or just VIPs maybe).

Re: Custom galaxies

i think custom galaxy should belong in VIP....let's say a player bought VIP can set up custom galaxy, then invite others (regardless of vip or not)...im not sure how that might work but could be interesting...
