Topic: Highspeed debt!

The analysis actually is far rosier than I would project.

All this idea is is about a signature project for politicians to show off like bling. Only no bling cost this much!

Everything bad in the economy is now Obama's fault. Every job lost, all the debt, all the lost retirement funds. All Obama. Are you happy now? We all get to blame Obama!

Re: Highspeed debt!

More [happy] retarded nonsense from the president.

This is not Europe. Our population isn't concentrated enough for this idea to work in a million years. Well, maybe in a million years, depending on population growth. But not now. Or in 10 years. Or 20. You get the idea.

This is a really stupid idea made to make idiots who will never use it or see it feel better about themselves, because their vote supported innovation and preserved the environment! Nevermind that government can't innovate, nobody would use it and so it wouldn't help the environment, and that all that wasted money and productivity could have gone toward something actually worthy. Just not spending it, because we don't have it, would be more virtuous and kind to America and the future generations he's going to saddle with paying for his bribes and gimmicks.

Re: Highspeed debt!

I love how the cost has gone up so much you can fly round trip for the cost to go one way on the future train.

Assuming of course they keep the cost down to make the train happen.

And the scary part is these government things always get much more expensive when construction actually starts! So instead of a single roundtrip by air, you could fly down twice and back I presume!

Re: Highspeed debt!

HiSpeed trains don't get used much in The Netherlands because the ticket costs are to high. If it doesn't work here, it sure won't work in a far less densely populated nation like the US.

Je maintiendrai

Re: Highspeed debt!

High Speed trains would be an innovation with future. China built a high speed rail road from the coast to Tibet. High speed trains became an industry in China (after they copied the german plans). Industry = jobs.

Re: Highspeed debt!

if you want to make money you'd need superadvanced trains at current run of the mill prices, otherwise you're better off putting the 105 billion$ into aviation technologies

remember that the eurotunnel project was also a big financial disaster

Re: Highspeed debt!

agreed with einstein here. Stupid project with low innovation and even lower return on investment...must be an obama plan.

Re: Highspeed debt!

Llow return on investment would be one thing.

This promises to waste billions.

When an employer could spend $50,000 a year for an employee... and make a profit... 20,000 jobs are ruined with a complete boondoggle.

Re: Highspeed debt!

funny, seems like its been skyrocketing ever since Bush
"There's no question about it. Wall Street got drunk. It got drunk and now it's got a hangover. The question is, how long will it sober up and not try to do all these fancy financial instruments?" [G.W.Bush, at Houston,Texas, 18 July 2008]

strange you didnt mention that

That quote isn't even referring to the debt crisis, ilu.

Re: Highspeed debt!

fact remains that after 8 years of economical height (Clinton Dem.), Bush jr (Rep.) managed to have it all come crushing down.

A republican ruined it, and now you blame a democrat for not being able to clean up his mess fast enough...

Re: Highspeed debt!

Bush made to much debt agreed, but Obama made it worse and if you compare, has a far bigger part in it. That's the opposite of cleaning up right?

These are facts no matter who's what. Look at the figures and show me I'm wrong.

You're wrong.

6.1 billion was accumulated by GWB,  2.4 billion by Obama.

@hotdogbun:
"You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts."
I disagree. The facts are with me, even in your source.

"Published: July 28"
If you also post a link with the debt made after july 28 you'll find out its not as pretty as it once looked.

"$5.7 trillion in January 2001 to $10.7 trillion by December 2008" Bush (5 trillion for 8 years)
$10.7 trillion in 2008 to $14.2 trillion by February 2011 (3,5 trillion for not even 4 years, that makes 7 for 8 years, but its bound to be more)

If necessary I'll explain myself more but I guess there's no need.

Re: Highspeed debt!

HDB citing the new york times for democratic support is like citing fox news for republican support.

Obama's plan to waste money on projects that are going to fail like this one are simply his tactic to get reelected by promising to create new jobs and revenue.

If we make thousands of new jobs and increase our national income at first and promise more jobs and pay those people with the money earned from first endeavors or goverment funds but then officially everything will fail and we will lose money in the end... Wait... this sounds like a ponzi scheme yikes

Are you disputing the set of numbers in that article, or just making an ad hominem argument?

Re: Highspeed debt!

first- yes i do dispute the accuracy of the results the nyt brings in as much as i would dispute the accuracy of the results fox news posts

second- youre comparing an 8 year term which involved a war (not disputing whether or not it was worth it. simply for monetary reasons) to a 4 year term

You ARE making an ad hominem argument. Also, the information which you are disputing (for illogical reasons) is not "from" the NYT, it is from the sources clearly cited in my post and in their article. They are merely reporting it.

"second- youre comparing an 8 year term which involved a war (not disputing whether or not it was worth it. simply for monetary reasons) to a 4 year term"
I'm not the one who made the comparison, little paul did. I disputed his claim and provided information to the contrary. Mission accomplished. Since there is no point in citing sources, I'm not going to bother looking for one, but I am pretty sure that the cost of the Iraq War was not included in GWB's deficit due to some accounting trick that was done away with during the current administration.

only harry potter could make the debt from the war go away from that analysis.  obama has wasted more efforts on useless people than any other president in history.  enjoy 4 more years of increasing debt

So you reject the part of the analysis that disagrees with your conclusion, based on the source, but accept a part of the same analysis form the same source if it includes something that supports your conclusion. That makes no sense.

im using your own prejudiced source against you like i would use an insurer's own prejudiced expert witness against my employee client.   the tainted source which admits stuff about their own party is at least the minimum weight against them

Re: Highspeed debt!

Aside from Obama being a good president or not. Comparing such numbers is useless. As you said yourself there was a war and a lot of money was spent on national security. On the other side, the surplus that was generated under Clinton was depleted and became even a debt! The official recession in America records to 2007 and you blame Obama (inaugurated in 2009) for not being able to clean up fast enough and I seriously doubt any republican would have done better either.

Anyway on topic; Any info as to the original idea / plans on this project. I would like to know some more to make a proper statement tongue

No you aren't. You're admitting a willingness to show confirmation bias and use data mining, but you are not utilizing anything from the article to make an actual argument or counter argument.
